Do hard and soft news reach the same people or different audiences? @julia_kling answers this age-old question with data on 60 million Russians on platform VK. Together with @florian_toepfl we show that soft news extends news exposure. Implications of war in paper. #ICA2023

Methods for measuring news avoidance (and consumption) are unreliable, so we built a new one! @morleyjweston presenting our extremely ambitious tracking study with @Mark_Eisenegger @OuzhouAdi @qryffel and @DnVglr. Custom method, custom sample, tracking mobile use. #ICA2023

6/ This positive effect exists both between users (heavy users benefit more) and within users (days with intense usage have higher exposure richness). (Thanks to Scharkow et al. for their random effect within-between model!)

New paper alert🌟: „Mapping Exposure Diversity“ out now in Journal of Communication doi.org/10.1093/joc/jqac009 Birgit Stark and I show that platforms are both beneficial and harmful to news consumption, depending on users’ behavior – a major shift in the literature. 1/11
