As a journalist who prizes his independence, I aspire the respect accorded to the Nu Metal Agenda. Although I suspect they have an unspoken bias against hair metal that we all just take for granted.

Has he never heard of nu metal?
Francis Fukuyama: "The lack of a strong national musical tradition contributes to the weakness of American national identity."

This is an important quote: "Families with institutional fluency and flexible schedules are better equipped to manage this hidden curriculum" The "hidden curriculum" shapes admissions in urban public schools, and then you get a whole new one for college

One of the great coincidences in finance: In 1952 Harry Markowitz published "Portfolio Selection." It became the foundation of modern asset management. The idea is that you optimize a diversified basket of assets along an efficient frontier by claiming to know what the currently “efficient” part of the frontier is (even though no one actually knows which assets will perform most efficiently in the future). That same year a British actuary named Frank Redington published "Review of the Principles of Life-Office Valuations." It showed how institutions could immunize their liabilities by matching them with assets across time. It became the foundation of institutional asset-liability matching. Almost nobody outside of insurance and banking knows it. The interesting thing is institutions adopted Redington because matching assets to liabilities is just the sensible way to manage cash flows. Meanwhile the industry sold Markowitz to retail investors….

Hear me out: What if I could find movies on the movie app?
Ousting top creative leaders, manually tweaking the content recommendation algo, pulling back on games -- all to try and arrest an alarming drop in U.S. engagement. It's a new world for once-unstoppable Netflix. w/ @jtoonkel and @JBFlint wsj.com/business/media/netfl…

The headline, subhead combo here is priceless. Social democracy plus legroom fees.

This is subjective but… Name three PERFCT movies. No argument. No explanation. Just three flicks you think are perfect. I’ll start: 1) Jaws 2) The Godfather II 3) The Empire Strikes Back (That was hard. I wanted to put three more. 😂)

Everything I believe about whether AI conscious (not sure what that means) or whether it deserves the moral status and solidarity we grant to our fellow humans (no—are you kidding?) is summed up by "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry."

Well, that is deeply weird.
1/ Mind blowing story about Trump accounts by @RichardRubinDC & @ashleaebeling. Under Treasury's new rules, a company can donate stock to a child's Trump account; parents can’t pick the stocks, reject donated shares, or sell for 5 years. Some possible implications...

In this college application season, my wish for you is that your kid is a B student. Most A students are about to get punched in the face by Ivy-plus schools. B students are going to be sorting through scholarship offers from 6 perfectly fine colleges spooked about enrollment.

We really place a high value on rankings and arbitrary tiers. A $3 billion donation could have transformed U Miami, or the public FIU. But they can't crack the top 25 unless another school falls out—so you get branch campuses of CMU and Vanderbilt instead.
There is a dearth of top research universities in the South relative both to its population and growth in advanced industries. With Carnegie Mellon-Miami joining Vanderbilt-West Palm, I expect this isn't the last of these announcements.
