Revolut CEO Nik Storonsky: “The US is not that competitive. Europe is even less competitive.” “China is competitive.” “China is 9/9/6. Even if you are good in Europe, or in the US, how can you out-compete the people who work 9:00 to 9:00, six days a week?” “I started in a co-working space with 140 companies. Within 5 years, only 3 companies survived. They all worked on the weekends.” “Within 10 years, only 2 companies survived out of 140.” “Working weekends is a must if you want to survive. Purely statistically.”

i bet you didn’t know about the SMARTPHONE MAFIA?
THE SCALE MAFIA one of the most special parts of starting a company is watching the people you fought and bled with in the early days go out and change the world. the Scale crew was supernatural. @scale_ai was one of the first companies to IOI and IMO-maxx, and the magic of Scale was that all of these geniuses gave a shit and ran through walls. it's no wonder that the Scale mafia is the first true mafia of the modern tech era. just to name a few: - cognition founder @stevenkplus1 & president @russelljkaplan - modal founder @akshat_b - tech & science advisor to POTUS @mkratsios47 - claude code head of product @_catwu - kpcb partners @LM_Braswell & @nayakkayak - bun founder @jarredsumner - tbd head of product @lindugong - netic founder @melisatokmak - cobot founder @BradPorter_ - secureframe founder @shravvmehtaa - paramount skydance cfo @DennisKCinelli - thinking machines gc lauren lennon - partner at greylock @sophia_luo_ - liquid ai coo jeffrey li - gallatin ai founder @agilemofo - tbd safety @_julianmichael_ - center for ai safety president @devindkim [photo courtesy the beautiful wedding of @thenateherman (who in many ways was a cofounder of Scale) and @ChristinaG325]

Economics is a social science. Unlike the laws of physics, economic laws are neither timeless nor universal. They are historically contingent, shaped by social relations and institutions, and vary across time and space.

" people think every day is a day added to their life but each day is another day subtracted from what is left of our lives. By that logic, each minute you spend gets more expensive as you have fewer left"
This is a very interesting conversation. Time is the most valuable resource in the universe, and you need to spend quality time with your family. The thing is, your family also needs you to be functional and earn enough money to take care of them. It is a huge dilemma. I did the same doubling-of-rates thing to get my time back, and immediately after I got some breathing space last year, an extended-family health emergency got me scrambling back into gigs that took my time again. I'm spending time on projects I thought I would never do again. I now do strategy work for companies and people smaller than those I worked with before. One thing I have learned is to make sure I carry my family along. My son was helping me book meetings before he went to school. When my daughter was 8 years old, she used to look at my Google Calendar, see when I didn't have meetings, and book playtime with me. I now understand why some very successful people turn their businesses into family businesses: it is the only way they can share time with their family. A mentor shared his food service business with his children and their spouses, and they all run it together. My wife’s aunt has her two kids in there with her 6 days a week, running her trading business. Maybe if I start this fish thing that I have been postponing, I will make it a family thing. Consulting and selling my time has taken a toll on everything else. I don't even have enough time to turn it into products or paid content that I don't have to deliver by myself. 2027 will be very different, with higher consulting rates. Time gets more valuable as you grow older. I listened to something that stopped me cold this week. It was something like - people think every day is a day added to their life but each day is another day subtracted from what is left of our lives. By that logic, each minute you spend gets more expensive as you have fewer left.

Do you'll know that in Zimbabwe we study William Shakespeare. Charles Dickens. Jane Austen. Mark Twain. William Blake. William Golding. George Orwell. The Bronte sisters. The same literature texts that you study. To add icing on the cake, we also appreciate our own world recognised African giants in literature. Wole Soyinka. Chinua Achebe. Ngugi Wathiongo. Charles Mungoshi. Mariama Ba. Chimamanda Ngozie Adichi. Tsitsi Dangarembga. Yvonne Vera. Dambudzo Marechera. Too many to mention. Don't ever, in your life underestimate what we can do with words.
