Led by @pec_exeter with @MathewBEllis and myself - new #evidence review for @JNCC_UK of availability of #data and reliability of #models to asses #sustainability of #waterbird harvest by recreational #hunting in the United Kingdom #policy #wildlife #people
New report published today reviews whether current data collection on hunting bags can reliably determine whether shooting of legally-huntable waterbird species is sustainable in the UK bit.ly/45gaCkT This evidence will support the UK's obligation towards @unep_aewa

I really enjoyed talking with the Shoothub team about our work on rearing better gamebirds, the economics & ecology of game release, and my progression from bowerbirds to pheasants. Well worth a listen if you want to understand more about game rearing open.spotify.com/episode/6kt…

Pheasant Fact Friday!   The hen's ovary development will begin the first of April, which is 30 days after the start of the rooster's testicular development. Why the difference? The earlier growth with the rooster stimulates his desire to break from the winter flock, set up a territory, defend its boundaries and display to hens.   While the rooster may start the spring breeding season, it is the hen that puts the most energy and labor into the season. The additional 30 days are needed to physically prepare the hen for the breeding season, which has a greater chance of killing her than did the winter season.   #pheasantfactfriday #pheasantsforever

New commentary out in @BBS! Archaeological objects like cave paintings, figurines, and musical instruments are often seen as early art forms uniquely tied to human symbolic cognition. But I've long been struck by how this view overlooks remarkable parallels in the animal world.
