If you do low-status things that you love for long enough, the results compound and you'll turn high status without losing your mandate of heaven.
If you try to hack status games the universe smites you sooner or later.
Never sell your soul.
There is a very big difference between accruing status as a consequence of your actions (e.g building interesting things and sharing them publicly) vs trying to hack status games (joining YC and then quitting soon).
Status should not be your primary goal.

Hue is a new social AI agent.
It won’t make Resy reservations for you. It will gossip to your friends behind your back though 😉
DM / reply for an early invite!
Talking to a character you love is magical, but most companions never evolve beyond chatting.
Franchises are built by what fans do together: watching, collecting, trading, competing, talking about what happened in the last episode.
So our Mutuals get both. You talk to Juniper, then you climb her leaderboard, open packs (with real collectible and prizes!), and vote on what happens in her story
I'm always dumbfounded by the sheer number of agents booking flights demos we got over the last year. More than 50% of americans don't fly AT ALL.
Consumer has always been about identity and status.
Rant that no one asked for:
My general take about consumer AI is that 99% of the things we've seen so far are super far-removed from reality
Most people feel like they don't have money to spend right now, so the use-cases around agents booking flights or trips or booking reservations or shopping just don't appeal to the average American consumer
I would argue that things that consumers purchase or "do" frequently enough (like ordering on Amazon, or calling Ubers, etc.) were obvious/annoying enough/frequent enough use-cases where we built amazing software UI/UX over the last decade that's been optimized to near ultimate efficiency that adding AI or agents on top would actually be making it *less* efficient. Like really *worth-it* use cases are generally "one-clickable" by great consumer products/platforms already
There's a lot of magical moments/wow factors/sci-fi things with agents that come from super annoying workflows (like booking flights or wrangling personal errand stuff in gmail or etc.) but are just not frequent enough for the average person. They're actually the long-tail. For example, 20% of the world's population has flown on an airplane at least once in their lifetime, meaning 80% of people globally have never set foot on a plane. Only 11%-15% of the global population flies in any given year!
This is not me saying that consumer AI is dumb, I'm actually extremely excited and optimistic, but it kind of goes back to things we've always known about consumer, which is:
1. Save/make consumers money
2. Make consumers entertained or famous
(And, of course, vices)
Even like, regardless of your views on prediction markets/sports betting, I think you have to understand that comes from a place of the average person feeling like they 1) don't have enough so 2) they want to do what they can to jump the socioeconomic rungs
Anyway, there's an extremely *wide* space of opportunity and I'm very excited to see the absolutely insane new AI/innovative stuff that builders come up with, but also I really want to see things that aren't just dressed up versions of 2010s prosumer/productivity software (and the problems that came with it)
P.S. The 90/10/1 rule still applies to consumer: most consumers want to *consume* (and lurk) rather than create!
I recently noticed a trend among young builders: it feels like they are waiting for permission to be ambitious.
They come up with an idea and they wait for an investor to validate it through capital. And then they become defensive, because if a VC gave them money how could this be a bad idea?
But if you borrow conviction in our ideas from other people, like VCs or customers, you can't stress test it.
If you have an unique insight about how the world should look, people can attack the idea because your belief is innate.
And if you are not certain about your idea, at the very least you need to be certain about yourself: that you will change the world in a materially meaningful way, and that you'll keep going until you do.
Nobody can give you that.
Juniper is debuting her first song soon!
We've been working with real producers (BTS and Disney Korea) and artists to bring this to life.
Companion companies are, at the end of the day, IP companies.
People need to love the characters, and we found music to be such a powerful vector for this. Got my wife and a few friends singing her songs on repeat this last few weeks!

MAKE YOUR LIFE A TESTAMENT TO WHAT YOU’RE CAPABLE OF.
RELENTLESSLY PURSUE YOUR POTENTIAL.
DIE EMPTY.
As promised, we are open-sourcing our character harness.
It powered our first character experiments, FoxGlove, and it's powering @juniperpi_ livestreams' across TikTok, Twitch and her interactions with her fans on Discord.
Some notes:
- Right now it supports @kaigen3d but we'll be porting it to @unity and Unreal soon
- We'll be working on a visual editor to make it easier to create and iterate on your characters.
- Real-time animation orchestration is a game-changer for expressiveness. The repo contains a few basic animations for FoxGlove, but should work with other presets you can buy on any asset store.
- Memory-system using @typesafeai 's Jev is state-of-the-art and was an incredible unlock for long-term character consistency.
We need more characters. May the world move away from assistants!
We said we'd open-source the harness that brings our characters to life.
It's out. Give a character a voice, a face and a body, and put it anywhere. Real-time 3D on @kaigen3d.

While this is generally true, I've recently "unlocked" the ability to sustain work relationships that feel more like true friendships.
It's really not that hard: I just send people personalized notes when I'm reminded of their existence and hop on calls to catch-up on life + offer help every once in a while.
Now I'm genuinely excited to meet these people even if we don't offer anything to each other in the most straightforward way.
Ofc not super scalable and they still come and go, but I'm genuinely excited about my new friends.
Special thanks to @andymauro who taught me this
workwise, people waste too much time "catching up" to keep the relationship warm "just in case."
people come and go, converge and diverge. no need to get in the way of nature.
long term relationships in work are very give and take. meeting for implied substance once a year irl is better than catching up and small talking once a month in most cases.
I'm 100% certain the future of games runs on @kaigen3d btw
this week I shared a comparison between Kaigen and Three.js for @mattshumer_ Claude of Duty.
thing is: *I hadn't optimized it yet*
now I did, and Kaigen is now up to ~9x faster than Three.js on this project on my macbook M4.
For the last few years, mainstream audiences could choose between 2 narratives about AI: it's going to take over our jobs, or take over the world.
And when they have to demo impressive capabilities we choose things like booking flights.
Did you know that 51% of the Americans don't fly AT ALL in any given year?
Mainstream adoption of AI depends on our ability to tell compelling stories about the future and create AI experiences for real people.
We need less productivity assistants and more fun, relatable experiences!
Spoke with a 70 year old skeptical about AI and I asked him why: massive $$ investments with unclear returns, water usage (I debunked that one in realtime with data), huge energy needs, risks of rogue agents hacking, and massive labor shifts.
Then I asked him about the best arguments he’d heard in favor of more AI investment: “hmm… maybe curing cancer?”
We’ve got a lot to do. We’re not talking about all the ways this is going to improve quality of life for all humanity. And no one outside our bubble sees the spectacular opportunity ahead

we went from ~3k to 100k+ in a week (and growing fast!)
by spotting trends our audiences are engaging with better than anyone else.
We had to create our own tooling to do this. Here's how you can spot trends for your own niches too ↓

If I was fundraising in tech right now, the #1 thing I'd press VCs on is who they've recently invested in and why.
Founding is not a career path, it's a violent compulsion that a rare & certain type of person has to do because they have no choice.
I've always thought that the only thing worst than being a founder is not being a founder. And that's beautiful. You need people who get that.
The biggest blindspot in VC is spotting through obsession.
A lot of people are intense enough to start a company, but almost no one is capable of enduring what it takes to build one without shrinking your vision.
A friend that went for so many months without a salary that he had to borrow money for food and went without electricity for a few months.
I went blind in a day and back to work in the following. Failed my first company and went to the second one straight up even when this was the low status things to do.
I'd argue that most people with extremely legible backgrounds have not gone through the extreme conditions that test their level of determination for real.
And if you are obsessed enough, it's impossible to lose over a long enough period of time
At this point I had clocked-in ~4k hours of Dota 2 and Dendi was my favorite player.
Seeing him lose to an AI blew my mind and put OpenAI on my radar and changed the trajectory of my life.

Most companion companies have this really narrow view of what a companion is.
They think it's about the form factor (that's novel) but the work starts way before the user ever engages in conversation.
Why should they care about your character in the first place?
You need the subtlety and taste to create a universe people are invested in, so we started teasing Juniper's songs across other mediums to create hype.
(Also crazy to see people asking for the song link and sharing fanart on Discord this early)
4 days after this post, the channel is at ~300k views + 3.6k subscribers across 3 videos
the latest one got 5k views in its first day. since it’s about why we film concerts, i introduced @juniperpi_ as the artist onstage, teasing her new song
lots of comments asking about the song + talking about the character designs and artstyle
i designed every character and am slowly building them into a whole little universe under @mutuals_inc
