As Side Event 4 at NAAS draws to a close, Betty Aguti from @Caritas_Ug reminds us that food is part of our everyday lives, making agroecology everyone’s concern. She called on Ugandans to embrace agroecology in all aspects of life and urged government to fast-track the passage of the Agroecological and Organic Bill. From food safety and quality to contamination concerns, the bill could help address critical issues affecting our food systems. Because the conversation about agroecology does not end in the fields. It begins with what we grow, what we eat and how we protect the food systems that sustain us. #AgroecologyWeekOfAction2026
What if standards and certification began with education rather than policing? During the Side Event 4 panel at 8th NAAS, discussions highlighted the need to educate farmers and agroecological actors on standards and certification, while advocating for approaches such as the Participatory Guarantee System (PGS), including within government. Panelists also emphasised the importance of engaging with existing policy frameworks and working groups, including the agro-industrialisation working group involving the Ministry of Trade, Ministry of Agriculture and other stakeholders to influence decisions and access available public financing. With more than UGX 4 trillion reportedly released for village-level development through initiatives such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), a key question is how agroecology actors can connect with these financing opportunities to support their priorities. Advancing agroecology requires not only sound policies, but also the knowledge, partnerships and strategic engagement to turn them into practical action. #AgroecologyWeekOfAction2026

🎙️ Meanwhile, Constantine Katongole calls for a bottom-up review of university curricula to ensure academic programmes respond to the real needs of farmers and other stakeholders. He emphasizes that farmers and end users must actively participate in shaping what universities teach so graduates can deliver practical solutions for smallholder agriculture. #AgroecologyWeekOfAction2026
🎙️ The Commissioner emphasizes the need to aggregate smallholder farmers into larger, coordinated projects to unlock carbon financing for sustainable agriculture and manure management. He explains that individual farmers with small plots may struggle to attract the investment needed to develop viable carbon projects, yet collective action, supported by carbon project developers, can help generate measurable emission reductions, mobilise funding, connect farmers to markets and ensure communities benefit from carbon credit revenues. He calls for partnerships that provide the technical expertise and resources needed to turn these opportunities into practical benefits for farmers. #AgroecologyWeekOfAction2026

Building sustainable markets requires collaboration. Farmers, policymakers, financial institutions, private sector players and other stakeholders must work together to address barriers to enterprise growth. Strong partnerships can connect producers to buyers, strengthen value chains and create markets that reward farmers fairly. #AgroecologyWeekOfAction2026

Afternoon Sessions || Side Event 4 How do we turn Uganda’s agrifood systems commitments into practical action? This afternoon, I've joined Side Event 4 at the 8th National Agroecology Actors’ Symposium (NAAS) to explore how financing, stronger institutions and coordination across sectors can advance Uganda’s agrifood systems transformation under the Kampala CAADP Framework. The focus is on addressing policy and institutional gaps, mobilising public and private financing, strengthening cross-sector coordination, and ensuring national priorities translate into action at the local government level. 1/2 #AgroecologyWeekOfAction2026

From production to profitable enterprises. Producing food is only part of the journey. Without reliable markets, value addition, appropriate technology and access to finance, farmers risk earning less than the value of their hard work. Stronger market linkages can help farmer enterprises become more competitive and profitable. #AgroecologyWeekOfAction2026

🎙️ Mr Ssemambo Mohammad, Commissioner in charge of Climate Change Mitigation at the Ministry of Water and Environment, highlights the growing contribution of manure management to Uganda’s greenhouse gas emissions. He notes that emissions from manure management increased from approximately 1.87 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent in 1995 to 3.3 million tonnes in the latest national inventory, underscoring the need for urgent action. He calls for clear policy guidelines, stronger coordination between government institutions, improved farmer training and research, and investment in biogas and carbon financing to turn manure into a valuable resource for energy and agricultural production while reducing emissions. He also emphasizes inclusive approaches that recognize the role of women and other groups involved in manure management, noting that effective interventions can contribute to Uganda’s climate commitments and potentially reduce emissions by about 2.9 million tonnes. #AgroecologyWeekOfAction2026

Presenting on the State of Agroecology in Uganda: Evidence, Progress, Gaps and Opportunities at the 8th National Agroecology Actors’ Symposium (NAAS), Mr. Sunday Bob George of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (@MAAIF_Uganda) has highlighted the need to embed agroecology across the country’s agricultural systems. This means going beyond individual projects to integrate agroecology into policies, programmes, research and agricultural extension services. It also means investing in farmer training, improving access to knowledge and markets, and creating an enabling environment for sustainable practices to grow. #AgroecologyWeekOfAction2026

Achieving this requires coordinated action from government, researchers, farmer organisations, development partners and the private sector. The opportunity is to build on existing evidence and farmer experiences, address the gaps and create a more systematic approach that supports farmers, protects natural resources and strengthens food and nutrition security. Scaling agroecology is not simply about doing more. It is about making agroecology part of how Uganda plans, invests in and delivers agricultural development. #AgroecologyWeekOfAction2026

Agroecology offers a pathway to achieving these goals by connecting food production with environmental protection, nutrition and the well-being of farming communities. The measure of agricultural transformation should not be production alone, but whether it builds resilient food systems and ensures communities can access safe, adequate and nutritious food. #AgroecologyWeekOfAction2026

He also emphasized that development partners cannot do this work alone. Strong partnerships among government, farmers, civil society and the private sector are essential to advancing agroecology. The message is clear: resilient food systems are built through long-term commitment and practical support for the people who produce our food. #AgroecologyWeekOfAction2026

🎙️ “Transforming Uganda’s food systems, ladies and gentlemen, won’t happen if we don’t meaningfully collaborate.” Charles Opiyo, Resilient Livelihoods Manager at Oxfam Uganda, stresses that advancing agroecology requires sustained investment, research and development, product innovation and respect for the rights of agroecology actors. He calls for an enabling environment where communities can access the resources needed to produce their own food, reinforcing the principle that the right to food goes beyond being fed to include the ability to grow food sustainably. He urges stakeholders to continue working with government to tackle poverty and inequality through resilient, inclusive food systems. #AgroecologyWeekOfAction2026
