Genuinely interested to know your sources Mick, because out of tens of thousands the Ryan Commission only heard from four former residents who gave evidence, at the request of the Sisters of Mercy, with positive accounts of their experiences of growing up in Goldenbridge. Its true the Commission has a dedicated chapter on positive memories and experiences across the schools generally but these certainly werent during the 1940s and 50s. Also the decades those four witnesses were resident werent 1940s or 1950s. Their testimony was also called by the congregation, not volunteered independently which says a lot.... Even the Sisters of Mercy's provincial leader acknowledged to the Commission that the industrial school system had failed children and was harsh and inadequate, while disputing some of the more serious allegations. So the accurate framing is that a few survivors gave positive accounts, but they were the exception, and the Commission's findings on the period rest on the harsher testimony. Some of me sources industrialmemories.ucd.ie/ry… industrialmemories.ucd.ie/ry… rte.ie/news/2005/0315/60960-…

Christine Buckley was born in Dublin in 1946. But this baby girl had a Nigerian father which in 1940s Ireland was quite unusual. Christine was placed in Goldenbridge Industrial School in Inchicore, run by the Sisters of Mercy, and there she stayed until her teens. Goldenbridge was meant to be a place of safety and care for kids. But like most Industrial Schools it was a prison for innocent children where they suffered hunger, beatings and fear. And any difference, like being a mixed-race child, got you singled out for particular cruelty. Industrial Schools also involved forced child labour. In Goldenbridge girls were made to produce rosary beads in bulk, with punishment waiting for anyone who fell short of the quota. The irony of tarnishing a symbol of love and Gods mother by abusing children forced to manufacture them is a unique evil. After surviving years of incarceration Christine finally was old enough to leave and trained as a nurse and midwife, and spent years bringing other people's babies safely into the world. Like countless other women failed by the state and church they made a career being kinder and more humane to the innocent. In 1992, Christine Buckley told her story (and in doing so the story of countless other victims) on The Late Late Show. And sadly, like so many other tales of injustice told before Irish society was able to accept it, the reaction against her was ferocious. She was doubted, attacked and accused of exaggeration. And some of the doubters were powerful and had obvious self interests. She kept going anyway. The 1996 documentary Dear Daughter put the stories of survivors in front of a national audience, and denial became far harder to sustain. In 1999 the State finally apologised, and the Ryan Report of 2009 confirmed what survivors had said for decades. Christine Buckley founded the Aislinn Centre to support former residents of the institutions and gave hundreds of them something they had rarely had, a room full of people who believed them. She pressed for redress and for the truth to be told in full. She was the recipient of the Irish 'Volunteer of the Year' award in 2009. In December 2012, Trinity College awarded her an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in recognition of her work for people who were subjected to institutional abuse. She passed away on 11 March 2014, aged 67, having forced a nation to face its past and also created a better future for girls and women in Ireland. christineb.ie/

What complete & utter bullshit! For many of us, Jewish identity & history is inextricably linked to justice, antifascism & antigenocide. It is the actions of the corrupt, racist Israeli state that endangers Jews, not the actions of those who oppose genocide in the name of universal justice, equality & antiracism
The two largest Jewish newspapers have co-written an editorial warning that if Palestine Action wins its appeal against proscription next week then the British Jewish community will feel utterly unprotected. Sadly they’re right.jewishnews.co.uk/jn-jc-rever…

I spoke with someone who works at my university about the difficulties I’m facing in my studies, the emotional exhaustion, and the overwhelming pressure I’m trying to cope with. He tried to encourage me by saying, “You’re from Gaza! You people are extraordinary. You can do the impossible and overcome even the hardest circumstances.” I know he meant well, but his words made me think deeply... Why does the world expect us, the people of Gaza, to be stronger than everyone else? Why are we expected to endure more than any human being should, simply because we have become accustomed to surviving the impossible? We are not superheroes. We are human beings, just like you. We get tired. We get scared. We feel weak. We cry. And sometimes, we simply lose the strength to keep going. Surviving a war does not mean we have healed from it. Reaching a place of safety does not mean our souls have left Gaza, or that the wounds of everything we have experienced have disappeared. We do not need more expectations placed upon us, nor endless admiration for our ability to remain resilient. We need to be allowed to feel exhausted, to rest, and to be ordinary human beings without feeling that we have disappointed anyone. Please, do not turn our resilience into an excuse to demand even more sacrifices from us. Do not turn our ability to survive into a lifelong obligation to endure the unbearable. We never chose to become symbols of resilience. We were forced to be resilient simply to stay alive. So please, do not punish us for surviving by expecting us to be superhuman forever. 💔

Israeli settler “godmother” Daniella Weiss casually told Swedish radio that previous plans for Gaza failed, so now they’ll just “wipe them out.” When asked about the 2+ million Palestinians in the way, she clarified she’s simply “taking care of the future of my country.” Meanwhile the blockade keeps tightening and the humanitarian crisis worsens by the day. Very normal, not-at-all-genocidal stuff.

Happy heavenly birthday to Vicky Phelan. 🕊️🎂 Today, we remember one of Ireland’s strongest and most courageous women. Vicky gave an incredible service to the women of Ireland and future generations—a hero who refused to bow down to the state in silence after being failed, choosing instead to fight so that others would be protected. Her bravery, truth, and legacy will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Vicky. ❤️✨ #VickyPhelan #CervicalCancer #Bravery #NeverForgotten

We have 3,000 LESS gardai now when measured against the population than we did in 2008 , Yet MSM let them away bosting about the highest number of gardai the state has ever had , not accounting for the rise in the population.

Religious Zionists do not practice Judaism. Their religion is “Zionism.” Our sacred faith is merely being exploited as a tool to cloak their abhorrent agendas. #NotInOurName

Wow! Canadian journalist asks Moshe Feiglin, a former Likud Member of Knesset, if he is concerned about Israel's plummeting global standing. Feiglin's response is chilling, as it reveals the fundamental supremacist view he and many in Israel hold. He says that the real moral supreme court is in Israel, ie with the people of Israel. The Bible says, he explains, that those who bless Israel will be blessed, and those who curse Israel will be cursed. As a result, it's we - Israelis - who get to judge you, rather than you judging us. And then he adds? "Are you with the children of God or not?"

Unjust laws will never be allowed to apply. We’ve had our fill of them in the past and we’re never going back. #NoGoingBack #GarvaghyRoad
Whilst the outcome of today’s case is not what we would have wanted, the judge starkly said: “The law does not apply only when you agree with it". Michelle O’Neill and Sinn Fein take note. The rule of law must and will apply.

And right now our defence minister Helen McEntee is concerned with one war in particular: the war between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. McEntee says Irish troops should be deployed to Lebanon as part of a new EU mission involved with not only peacekeeping – but peace enforcement. Peace enforcement includes joining “coalitions of the willing” and fighting wars of aggression like the 20-year Afghanistan war, and the wars in Iraq, which claimed the lives of well over a million people. If we consider the ideals the state was founded on, it is clear that Irish soldiers should never be involved in these kinds of missions.
