Casey and co. are excellent
Ever since launching our integration with @Substack, it’s been incredible to see how top podcast publishers are using @Listener to track their omni-channel campaigns. Working alongside the @PirateWires team has been a highlight (shoutout to @planetmaxwell and the entire PW team!). When they relaunched their podcast, they brought on some incredible brand partners, including @joinautopilot, @MonacoGTM, and @EightSleep. With Listener.com, they track every episode and campaign across audio, YouTube, social, and newsletter in one place. Substack publishers are some of the most impactful podcasters out there because of their deep communities, and we’re grateful to be working with many of the top publishers like PW. Running a podcast on Substack? Book 15 minutes with us and we’ll show you how it works with your own show.

read this if you saw people posting incessantly about AI “interpretability” and don’t know what that means or why Yudkowsky was mad about it
Could we prevent AI from killing us if we... simply understood how it works? Former OpenAI researcher @nickcammarata recently argued that understanding AI’s ‘reasoning’ is more possible than we thought. Does this mean it’s easier to control? @gb_rango breaks down the debate 👇

wherein the data center psyop pits earnest coloradans against one another
We followed a founder trying to build the most reasonable data center project in America: a dozen shipping container-sized boxes on a remote plot of sand in rural Colorado. No water. No noise. The local electric co-op says it'll lower power bills. You might expect the approval process to be straightforward. It wasn’t. As @JonasYDu reports: In September, over 60 residents packed a county office in rural Colorado (pop. 7,000), to question David Meyer (@thedmeyer), 29, whose startup Strata (@DeployStrata) wants to build modular data centers in neighboring Alamosa County 🧵

I don’t think self-driving cars will be banned. Waymo too magical.
We've got to get to critical "Too common to ban" mass ASAP. I'm doing my part by buying two self-driving cars this year.

This is my favorite, indulgent, sci fi series Hopefully the movies capture that
A ‘RED RISING’ movie is in the works at Paramount • Francis Lawrence (‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’) set to direct • The story follows a young miner living on Mars who attempts to bring down the color-coded class system (Source: hollywoodreporter.com/movies…)

“It is then no surprise that these people would be terrified of the antisocial potential of AI, for it represents a projection of their own high-decoupling mentality (separating Moral Thing from Rational Thing) run to its logical conclusion (Rational Thing kills everyone).” — @jane_gatsby
It’s easy to find sensationalized, low-brow, bad-faith writing about “rationalists” in the AI world. But is there perhaps a more sincere way of scrutinizing the worldview of the people at the heart of this movement: one that is currently shaping public discourse, policy proposals, and alignment research? In this earnest philosophical inquiry, @jane_gatsby explores: why are so many rationalists convinced AI will kill everyone while also participating in practices like “consensual non-consent” orgies? What could possibly explain the overlap? She offers three theories, culminating in: relational wounds. For rationalists, some of whom grew up with highly religious and/or disturbed parents, discomfort in the face of uncertainty fuels a fixation on control. This manifests in everything from elaborate, unconventional, kinky bedroom practices to AI alignment. Repressed desires and fears find increasingly extreme outlets. As Jane puts it: “what is artificial intelligence if not an Other of potentially cosmic significance who is impossible to predict or constrain?” These are just theories. But rationalists’ influence on AI discourse is undeniable, and their worldview, as Jane argues, is “metaphysically nihilistic.” There are other, more productive ways to approach AI development besides treating the models as some evil, adversarial force. Besides: “You cannot successfully align something when your own perspective is crooked.” Full piece threaded 👇

"We believe things should just be normal: the schools and the trains should be great, and their budgets should be balanced, the mentally ill drug addicts should be cared for in facilities safely removed from the public, the business climate should be open and free, it should be inexpensive to build in the city, anti-housing policies should be eradicated, and crime should be illegal."

Have the rationalists neglected to account for Fermi’s Paradox? Their own doom stories feature aliens, says @micsolana — but if intelligent life emerges naturally and inevitably builds superintelligence, a misaligned ASI should be tearing through the galaxy. So where is it?

.@Joey_tuccio makes a sharp point here: Watch how the groups profiting from Skid Row respond to these arrests. One to watch: the taxpayer-funded 'Skid Row Care Campus,' whose free needle exchange became a hub for drug dealers. The federal raid centered just across the street.
Thursday morning, federal agencies conducted a massive drug sweep across Skid Row, arresting 23 suspects in a long-awaited crackdown on the area's massive organized drug trade. @nicolewizman1 reported live from the scene with Skid Row public advocate @joey_tuccio as the operation unfolded.

How significant is the new Greenland defense agreement for Western power? Is it an artifact of the second Trump administration's attempt to save face, or is it a victory for long-term American interests in the Arctic? My new piece for @PirateWires below, an analysis of the pact:

Very fun read from @micsolana, who gamely engages the AI doom canon and makes a point I wish more people would: AI 2027 asks you to trade a speculative technological dystopia for a fairly concrete political one.
if we keep building artificial intelligence, will it kill every single person on the planet? I read the great works of the rationalist doom canon, and while they were compelling I concluded no, I think we're probably missing something. also: aliens. piratewires.com/p/doom-analy…
