I’ve written an essay about why 1950s Ireland had some of the highest institutionalisation rates in the world. Hopefully you find it interesting. (Link in reply.)

Most fundamentally, if you arrive in a Downing Street promising to pass power down from the centre to the people, but instead pass it up to Brussels, you aren’t Mr Localism any more.
Rejoining the EU might help Labour squeeze the Lib Dems - but it would also mean gutting Andy Burnham’s own policy agenda, from devolution to reindustrialisation to trade to regulation. My latest for @theipaper inews.co.uk/opinion/burnham-…

During the French Revolution's Reign of Terror people were mass murdered by being tied to barges which were then sunk in rivers & canals. The only limit to Robespierre's psychopathic & paranoid violence was the technology available.
The chaos of the Revolution and the Terror led to chronic political instability, which led to the imposition of a military dictatorship, and the dictator in question - Napoleon - reinstated slavery. So I'm not sure this is quite the killer argument this person thinks.

We have a Californian minimum wage for an economy which, outside of London, is roughly at the level of Bulgaria.
Britain’s new minimum wage: £27,456 a year. Higher-rate income tax kicks in at £50,270. Wage compression the Soviet Union could only have dreamed of.

MARTIN LEWIS THREAD:
The problem with the popularity of Martin Lewis, as an economic advisor for the masses, is that it reflects a stagnant economy and, consequently, an economic ethos geared towards extracting more from a fixed pie instead of trying to make the pie bigger.

Those of us with longer memories will recall the IEA leading the charge to scrap the net migration target and liberalise immigration rules before the Boriswave. When the CSJ proposed a higher salary threshold in 2019, Christopher called it “particularly stupid”.
Watching the penny very slowly drop at The Economist is always a pleasure.
