What makes Marinette's situation so tragic is that being a victim of manipulation doesn't absolve you of responsibility for the harm you cause, and being responsible doesn't mean you stop being a victim.
Gabriel exploited Marinette's love for Adrien, framing sacrifice as love. He didn't need to order her to lie; he created the emotional pressure that made her cooperate. But understanding her circumstances doesn't erase her agency or make her decisions right.
Marinette wanted to spare Adrien unimaginable suffering. Instead, she decided what he could know, what truth he could handle and how he should remember his father. When Adrien questioned that image, she helped maintain it rather than letting him explore his doubts.
This is especially cruel because Adrien ALREADY suspected his father wasn't a good person. The lie didn't just hide the truth; it undermined his ability to trust his own observations. That's where the gaslighting aspect becomes significant.
Marinette wanted to protect Adrien from pain but ended up taking away his control over his own story.
Gabriel's lie becomes the framework through which Adrien understands his father's death, his family memories and his OWN history. By using someone Adrien loves to maintain this false reality, Gabriel ensures that even after his death, others continue controlling what his son discovers.
He doesn't just want to escape the consequences of his actions; he wants to control how he'll be remembered. Marinette ends up trapped in a false dichotomy: preserve Adrien's "positive" memories or reveal the truth, when BOTH can coexist.
Nathalie's dynamic with Marinette is equally interesting because the lie eventually survives through the choices of those trapped in it.
Nathalie initially wants to turn herself in, but Marinette convinces her not to, arguing that Adrien needs someone by his side. Yet this also preserves the secret.
Then, in Mister Agreste, their roles reverse: Marinette wants to tell the truth, but Nathalie says it's too late. Marinette convinced Nathalie to remain within the lie, and now Nathalie uses that decision to convince Marinette they can't abandon it.
This doesn't necessarily mean Nathalie consciously manipulates Marinette, but they reinforce each other's choices. Nathalie now has more to lose: confessing means confronting her complicity and the consequences of letting Adrien live a lie. Claiming it's too late becomes rationalization. The longer they wait, the harder it gets to admit they can still choose differently.
Nathalie has a particular responsibility to tell Adrien the truth because she knows things Marinette might not. But that doesn't absolve Marinette.
Nathalie must answer for her complicity. Marinette must answer for contributing to the lie, undermining Adrien's understanding of his father and maintaining that false reality when he questioned it.
She can't simply say Gabriel manipulated her. She must acknowledge that she made choices that hurt Adrien and that protecting him never gave her the right to decide what he deserved to know.
Adrien might feel betrayed, become angry or need distance from her. He deserves his own reaction to the harm he suffered. Demanding immediate forgiveness because Marinette was also Gabriel's victim would prioritize HER emotional needs over his all over again. We can acknowledge Gabriel put Marinette in an unfair position, understand that she acted out of fear and love, AND recognize that she caused harm.
We don't need to turn her into a villain to hold her accountable, nor make her an innocent victim to acknowledge Gabriel's manipulation. That's what makes her arc so compelling: Marinette acted out of love but reproduced a dynamic of control that contradicts that very love because she wanted to prevent Adrien from losing his father a second time by discovering who he really was... But in trying to protect him from that loss, she risks becoming another person Adrien will have to recover from.

This actually sucks so hard. The masses demand original movies (as we should) and then none of you go to see them? I know I was seated in theaters for this movie. And I'll be seated for Wildwood. Where the fuck are the rest of you at???
