6000 older people died last year waiting for aged care. But Labor remains wedded to an algorithm that's systemically under-assessing and denying care. Every older person deserves a human clinician determining their clinical needs – not a computer. youtu.be/VP34BGPCLDk?si=ppv0…

When public servants give evidence in a public hearing, about jobs that the public pays them to do, their answers should be direct, unambiguous, and detailed. That is the contract between the public and government. Any suggestion otherwise goes against that agreement.

“I was released today after about four and a half months of detention.” Dr. Mazen al-Rantisi, a 71-year-old physician from Ramallah known across the West Bank as “the doctor of the poor,” speaks with a fresh wound on his face, inflicted half an hour before his release on October 25, 2026. He says a jailer dragged him to the release room handcuffed behind his back, shackled at the legs and blindfolded, then shoved and kicked him to the ground. Israeli occupation forces seized al-Rantisi from his home in the al-Tireh neighbourhood of Ramallah in June without announcing any reason, and his daughter says he lost around 25 kilograms in their prisons. He describes Nafha prison as overrun with scabies, affecting nearly 80 percent of the Palestinian hostages held there, with almost no medicine given. When prisoners beg the passing nurse for treatment, he says, they are cursed at, mocked and ridiculed, and he was taunted for taking the chronic medication a court had ordered he receive. He calls on international human rights organisations to intervene, saying Palestinian hostages are beaten and punished at the whim of their jailers with no oversight or accountability. @Aljazeeraquds

Meanwhile, they've acted on NONE of the Robodebt Royal Commission's recommendations for legislative reform in over 3 years, including to restore the normal statute of limitation of 6 years to social security debts. Why wouldn't they do that? This is why. xitter.cf/maximumwelfare/status/…
The Coalition made social security recipients exempt from the ordinary statutes of limitation on debt that apply to everyone else, it was a cornerstone of Robodebt. The Royal Commission recommended this law be repealed, which would be simple. Labor have ignored it for >3 years.

Today in why the fuck are people like this! The Bracknell Football Club has posted a very long statement describing a man charged with rape as having a 'difficult chapter' The lengthy ramble - probably the work of AI - was in response to senior coach Josh Adams being charged with three rapes. The allegation relates to an attack on a sleeping woman. The victim had to leave the town after club president Nicole Jones demeaned her for bringing the information to the club's attention. Adams' cousin (no less) is the author of the post that appeared on the club's Facebook page. In it she writes: "We must remember that people are more than headlines, allegations or one difficult chapter". The entire post is a woe is me for Adams, the club, footballers, the school, the futures of local children and the community. Not one word is said for the victim. NOT FUCKING ONE! There's no acknowledgement of her distress, pain, trauma or wellbeing. it doesn't recognise that she has had to leave her home or that she was ostracised for speaking up. In terms of the references to children's safety, the victim and her mum told the club not long after the assaults. The club allowed the coach to remain in his role, which would have seen him in contact with children, teenagers and other women, for about 16 months. Indeed, he was only stood down recently and because police notified the club because the charges impacted his working with children certification. So here we are again. An entire football club stepping up for their man while the woman he is accused of raping is out here struggling to get through every day.

A little generosity can go a long way at Christmas. The Kmart Wishing Tree is a simple way to help make the season brighter for families who are doing it tough. If you can, consider adding a gift this year. 🎄🎁

🤣🤣 Like David, I'm so sick of relics like Don selling the bejesus out of AI's great potential to fix the world's ills, yet they can't explain why it can't detect copyright. AI is a grand-scale thief.
AI companies say their products can cure cancer, take us to Mars, but apparently not respect the copyright of artists and creators... that just doesn't add up. Maybe the Minister isn't afraid but artists and others are!

The die-hards really are as blind and illogical as they believe the other side is. Their guiding light should be truth and justice and decency - not simply barracking for a team regardless because somehow they believe this is all about teams and binaries. I wrote an article last week about men's violence where I also called out Albanese for his misogynistic manner and selfie love with Trump. The usual rusted suspects rolled up to - no, not to support or discuss the core problem of men's violence against women - but to bleat that I had "bashed" Albanese. Let me tell you I didn't even get out of 2nd gear about him in that article. Didn't even get my nails wet.

That story about Google killing hundreds of thousands of trees in Finland for its data center project is such a perfect microcosm of what capitalism is doing to our world. Recent mass media headlines are saying the tech giant "illegally" cut down "250,000" trees, but both claims paint an inaccurate picture of what actually happened. Google killed 400,000 trees (250,000 near a town called Muhos and another 150,000 near the village of Otanmäki), and unless the company's executives actually wind up going to prison for this, their actions cannot properly be described as "illegal". I don't know who first coined the saying "If the penalty is a fine, then it's legal for rich people," but it certainly applies here. The Finnish Licensing and Supervision Authority has reportedly ordered Google to suspend all “measures that significantly change the environment," saying it will "consider enforcement proceedings and fines" if the megacorporation does not comply. Google's parent company Alphabet has a net worth of around four trillion dollars. Whatever paltry penalties Finland might impose for these ecocidal actions, it won't have any meaningful effect on Google. Giant corporations do this shit all the time. They calculate that the fines incurred by their abusive actions will be dwarfed by the massive profits they generate, issue fake apologies as needed, and leave it to their armies of lawyers to minimize the damage. That's why the Sackler family is still worth billions despite all the fines Purdue Pharma was slapped with while creating the US opiate epidemic. A 2017 Harvard study titled “The Opioid Epidemic: Fixing a Broken Pharmaceutical Market" contains the following paragraph: "Although civil claims and criminal charges were brought against Purdue and its executives, the resulting penalties paled in comparison to extended-release oxycodone profits. In May 2007, the company and its president, chief counsel, and former chief medical officer pled guilty to falsely marketing extended-release oxycodone as 'less addictive, less subject to abuse and diversion, and less likely to cause tolerance and withdrawal than other pain medications.' As part of the plea bargain, Purdue agreed to pay the federal government $600 million and 27 states $20 million. The three executives agreed to $34.5 million in fines but avoided jailtime. By contrast, Purdue has earned an estimated $31 billion in total revenues from extended-release oxycodone since its launch. Rather than deterring fraudulent marketing, the penalties simply became a cost of doing business." A cost of doing business. That's how things work under capitalism. The law primarily exists not to protect people or the environment, but to protect the interests of capital. If you destroyed a Google data center you'd probably be charged as a terrorist and spend decades in prison, but Google can destroy the natural world around you and get off with a finger wag and a symbolic fine. If you stole millions of dollars from your employer you'd go to prison for grand larceny, but if your employer steals millions from its employees you need to win a class action lawsuit to get back what they stole from you. Proponents of capitalism often pretend they support minimal government intervention in civilian affairs, but their entire model is at all times propped up by state power using force to protect the haves from the have-nots at every level of our society. Corporations are free to destroy the environment, destroy your health, rob you, exploit you, and manipulate your government to their advantage, and if you ever take action to stand up to this world-devouring onslaught, the state will lock you in a cage. In school we are taught that that the law exists to protect ordinary people from bad people, but that's not true at all. Under capitalism, the law exists to protect the very worst among us from everyone else. That's why we are seeing our planet being turned into dust and ashes for no reason other than shareholder profit. It's an insane system, and it needs to end. These freaks are feeding our entire biosphere into the woodchipper.
