The EU age verification app is presented as “completely anonymous”. But the risk is that member states (the countries are supposed to create their own versions of the open-source EU app) use it to introduce identity verification that makes it impossible to post anonymously on social media.
The idea behind “completely anonymous” is to use Zero-Knowledge Proof (ZKP) cryptography to break the link between the age credential issuer (EU governments) and the regulated services/sites. Currently, the EU app does not have ZKP functionality, contrasting Ursula von der Leyen’s claim that the app ”is technically ready to be used”. But more importantly, the app is designed to always function without ZKP technology; if ZKP is unavailable, the app falls back to a non-ZKP model. Even if fully developed ZKP technology could be implemented in the future, it would remain an optional extra feature that countries may choose to disable and that the EU could remove at any time.
This means that the EU could decide at any time that ZKP may no longer be used, and in one stroke the app would fall back to its default mode, meaning that every post on social media carries an ID tag. By that point, an infrastructure will already have been rolled out; people will have gotten used to it, and it will be harder to roll it back.

The 4th Amendment was supposed to prevent a surveillance state.
Yet we're surrounded by cameras, tracked by our phones, and surveilled without warrants.
It's not working.

Patent law should not operate in the silence and reclusion of a Trappist Monastry. EPO and big companies ignored the exclusion of plants and animals in the EPC, like they did for software?

Chat Control 1 is dead. Let’s end Chat Control 2.
Members of The European Parliament: stand firm in your position – no mass surveillance whatsoever!

You did it! 🥳
European Parliament just decided that Chat Control 1.0 must stop.
This means on April 6, 2026, Gmail, LinkedIn, Microsoft and other Big Techs must stop scanning your private messages in the EU. #PrivacyWins 💪
🚨No Joke: Conservatives in the EU Parliament (EVP) want the vote on #ChatControl 1.0 to be repeated this Thursday - even though the Parliament already voted NO! 😡

USA investerer massivt i AI. Europa halter langt bagefter.

A quick update on the infamous EU “ChatControl” 🇪🇺
What a turn of events in EU tech policy: from potential mandatory mass scanning of data (“ChatControl”) → to even voluntary scans losing their legal basis (for now).
Just months ago, fears were growing around mandatory scanning of private communications in the EU (incl. pictures and videos).
Now, talks between the EU Council (Member States) and the European Parliament have collapsed - and the result is a complete reversal.
As of April 3, even voluntary scanning of data by platforms loses its legal basis under EU privacy (ePrivacy & GDPR) rules, as the temporary exemption was not extended.
A striking example of how fast EU tech policy can turn - and a big win for European privacy advocates.

So it begins.
ArchLinux 32 project has restricted access to Brazilian users.
This is due to recently implemented Brazil law that enforces age verification at the operating system level.
But this is more of a workaround, if I can even call that, than a solution.
More and more US states are proposing age verification laws at OS level.
What then? Will Linux distros start restricting their web access in those states as well?
