My thoughts on Manchester United, Michael Carrick and Bruno Fernandes after the 4–1 defeat to Como. I can talk about tactics all day, but what I watched last night went far beyond a tactical problem. There is something seriously wrong at Manchester United. 🔴THREAD 🧵

According to my source, Matheus Cunha had an altercation with Michael Carrick last night at half-time, and what followed created serious friction in the dressing room. Cunha’s frustration stemmed from what he perceived as a lack of collective effort. He reportedly argued that the team wasn’t functioning as a unit, with some players working hard while others were strolling around the pitch. Not everyone took kindly to that assessment. Some players reportedly felt Cunha was disrespecting them by suggesting they weren’t giving their best. Cunha also questioned the decision to play Bruno Fernandes as a false nine. His argument was that the system wasn’t working because there was nobody occupying the right positions to receive the ball in the final third. He reportedly urged the coaching staff to make a tactical adjustment. Bruno wasn’t happy with that criticism. He responded angrily, insisting he was simply carrying out the manager’s instructions. Things escalated from there, with several players, including Bruno, confronting Cunha over what they perceived as him blaming individuals rather than accepting collective responsibility. Carrick was unhappy with the situation, and this is said to have contributed to his decision to substitute Cunha. My source also claims the dressing-room tension affected the team’s performance in the second half, which is why they conceded three more goals, because they were not in the right frame of mind. Michael Carrick has not only lost the dressing room; the players have also lost trust in each other. Crazy times at Manchester United.
According to my source, Michael Carrick lost the dressing room at Manchester United following the reintegration of Marcus Rashford into the squad. I’m told Carrick assured Rashford that he would play a major role in his plans for the season. However, this reportedly raised concerns among other players, particularly Matheus Cunha, who wanted clarity on his role given that he and Rashford operate in similar positions. Cunha is understood to have approached Carrick over the situation, but Carrick reassured him that Rashford’s return would not affect his playing time. Despite those assurances, Carrick’s decision to repeatedly start both players together, even when the combination wasn’t working, reportedly became a source of frustration within the squad. The Manchester City game was reportedly the breaking point. That was the moment several players lost faith in Carrick’s decisions, with trust in Michael Carrick said to have deteriorated significantly. There’s also growing discontent among some players over the board’s decision to sack Ruben Amorim last season. They reportedly believe Amorim had established a clearer footballing structure and that the team performed better under him, despite the disappointing results. Lisandro Martínez is reportedly among those who hold this view. This could also explain his apparent frustration after the match against Atlético Madrid. We are really in crazy times at Manchester United.

No need to moan about water under the bridge — but these are 4 things that we must learn 1. Manchester United is a very fragile team and will be a very fragile team until the club can string together several successful seasons. This is really a fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me situation. We know this. This is not news, let’s never forget it again. 2. Throughout football history — if a team is really fragile, is in a real rut, it takes a lot to get it out of it. There are only — two — ways to achieve it. Either (i) you wait 1-2 decades for a golden generation, a coach who is god sent or something similar or (ii) you spend yourself out of it by spending a lot more than your rivals. Not almost as much as rivals one year. But a lot more than them. The data is quite clear if we look at inflation adjusted numbers. It takes £400-500m 3-4 seasons in a row. 3. When a team is in a rut and is spending itself out of it — ie the only alternative that must not have a 1-2 decade time frame — a lot of money will always be wasted. The only top teams that can get more out of their spending are mature established teams. City didn’t have to spend that much for a few years. Real sometimes don’t spend at all. Fergie spent very little his last years. But if we look at nouveau riche Chelsea (two times), City, PSG and co — they wasted a lot of money. Real and Barça have both at different times fallen behind, made really big land deals with the government, and recovered their position at the top, and wasted a ton of money during the process. The notion that Man United under Ineos would outperform our rivals in terms of team building is utterly flawed. We threw together a new front office. Had a team that was a mess on the pitch. 4. Playing in both the PL and the CL in 2026 is really really really tough. Both City and Arsenal had really strong squads last season, but struggled quite a bit. Liverpool had a crap season. Like Arsenal’s 2-2 draw away at Wolves late last season was a collapse. United and Tottenham have collapsed completely multiple times the last years. But so has City, it had some horrible stretches under Pep only saved by enormous spending in January. If you go into a CL season as a PL team and don’t hedge your bets — it will be a disaster. Like I said during the summer — bottom 5 in the PL for this team can definitely not be excluded given the work we did.

“Half pressed man-to-man”
🚨🎙️ | Michael Carrick reacts to Bruno Fernandes' comments where he seemingly questioned the tactics: "We actually half pressed man-to-man in the second half and conceded from that. "If you don't RUN, don't run forward and you don't run back you are NOT going to win."

Please see our exclusive on 11 October 2026. Other media agencies are reporting our story this morning.
Exclusive 💣 Manchester United begin process to identify next head coach, sources indicate. Club sources have confirmed that Manchester United have started formal progress on appointing a new manager. Representatives of Julian Nagelsmann are open to listening to the club’s future plans and assessing whether the project aligns with his client’s footballing philosophy. Senior figures at the club are now understood to believe that current head coach Michael Carrick is not the right profile to take the team to the next level technically long term. Michael Carrick will need a miracle to stay on as manager long term which the club expect won’t happen. New Manchester United manager incoming 🔜

Congratulations to the club’s management and ownership. One bad decision after another, brought to us by a bunch of incompetent pretenders and pretentious buffoons, banal conjurors of cheap tricks, feeble evangelists of amateurism addicted to failure.

If you heard Bruno Fernandes' post-match comments after the Como loss and wondered what he was referring to, we cover Man Utd's pressing issues in this video 👇
This week, our show is all about Man United. Lots of debate following Martinez's interview midweek deflecting away from on-pitch stuff at the club, but in this video, we show how there are very obvious areas of improvement to be found defensively. LINK BELOW

#mufc scouts decided against signing Bruno Fernandes this summer as he gives the ball away too much in possession. The club had concerns over his decision-making on the ball #mulive [mail]

🚨The state of Manchester United is an absolute DISGRACE, and the post-match interviews after our last two Champions League games tell you everything you need to know about how broken this football club is. • Lisandro Martínez publicly called out Jason Wilcox and the board for failing to back the manager in the summer, insisting more should have been done. • Bruno Fernandes has now questioned Michael Carrick and his coaching staff over their tactics and approach to tonight’s game. When your own players are publicly questioning both the people running the club and those managing the team, you know things have reached BREAKING POINT. There is NO turning back from this. Carrick, the coaching staff and those responsible at board level need to go. The ownership must be held accountable, and several players should be shown the door too. This football club needs a COMPLETE RESET from top to bottom.

Bruno’s comments are a disgrace. Martinez on Wilcox last week. Bruno on Carrick and his staff tonight. If, and it’s a big if, Carrick keeps his job, he needs his players and captain with him. I can’t find the word. Disgrace doesn’t do it justice. He played like he’d already decided the tactics were not going to work.

Bruno saying decision not to press was down to United's staff, Carrick finally calling out the players for the fact they pick and choose what games they want to commit to (which he is so spot on about an wish he would have vocalised earlier). We've reached that point.
🚨 Michael Carrick: “You can’t choose when you want to perform and when you don’t or when you give 100% or perhaps don’t.” #MUFC

Try Grok @Bot, you will love it!
I've been GrokBot pilled. First of all, Grok knows me better than other bots, like Meta Muse, thanks to the 300,000 posts I've done here for 20 years. But now that GrokBot @bot can read lists, it opens up powerful new personalized news capabilities. I've done this for about a year over on alignednews.com -- but last month my X API bill alone was $6,000. For a couple of hundred a month you can do the same with lists, either you create, or ones other people have created. Last night I stuck in my "best in AI" list and had it write me this news page: docs.google.com/document/d/1… Every hour my bot reads that list and builds me a new news page. Now I've only put about 10 minutes of effort into this so far. So it's not the prettiest thing you ever have seen, but my bots are working on other ways to present them to me. And you can do the same for any topic you care about. You just need to build a list, or find one that's already built and there are millions of lists here on X on literally any topic. Put your favorite football team onto a list, along with all your favorite journalists or other fans. Then have Grok bot read them for you. And that's just the start. You can have it write you a script based on the news, then copy that into, say, @Gemini_Notebook and then you get a podcast, or a video. Based on what people are saying on your topic here on X. Thank you so much X for making lists far more powerful than they ever were before. Makes the thousands of hours I've put into mine over 20 years so much more useful. Tips? Start small. You can chew through your tokens very quickly. It's amazing how good it is with a small list, like this one, which is what created the page up above: xitter.cf/i/lists/19535363366753… (Best AI accounts I've found out of 70,000 here on X). Don't over hit it. You only need your bot to read the list every hour. Maybe even less. If anything is really important it gets reshared into lists, so the bot doesn't need to hit it often to build you a really great set of things that are important to pay attention to. I've been begging for this capability for years. THANK YOU X!

The idea that United could now launch an ambitious long-term project with someone like Nagelsmann seems completely unrealistic at this point. The club lacks sporting capacity for something like that, and without sporting capacity, the whole thing would fall apart again, foding under the pressure caused by bozos and pretenders. What I mean by sporting capacity? Just like a company needs to have design capacity, sensibility and talents to design good products, a club needs sporting knowledge, deeply established at every level, to produce consistent results and performances. Who at United would be having serious, in-depth discussions with Nagelsmann, to understand how the project is developing, what is needed to resolve core tactical and personnel issues, how the coach is looking to improve his game model? The same people who had those kinds of discussions with Carrick, Amorim and Ten Hag? Who would be the people working on United's playing identity, strategy, game model and tactics? The same people who failed to do that with Carrick, Amorim and Ten Hag? Instead of top-level sporting operatives, we have Wilcox, completely out of his depth, and a petrochemicals tycoon who seems to believe he should be making footballing decisions.
