Five years ago today, northern Utah was shaken by the M5.7 Magna earthquake. Since then, the University of Utah Seismograph Stations has recorded >2800 aftershocks, 90% of which occurred in the first year following the mainshock.

i haven't seen a breakdown of a geothermal power plant on here, so now that we own one, here's a quick breakdown of how they work with some pics ⚡️
*note that in the aerial footage, the operating geo plant is center

📢 ¡Anuncio! La traducción a español de "Echando raíces en tierra de terremotos (Utah)" ya está disponible.
Como sismólogo, me enorgullece contribuir a este libro, informando a la comunidad de habla hispana en Utah de como prepararse para terremotos

Exciting news! Paper number two at @UofUGeo is out. In our 2D velocity profile, we imaged a low-velocity zone in Central AK beneath the Alaska Range that might be related to material from the slab. Check out this note from @adndotcom with coauthor C. Tape adn.com/alaska-news/science/…

It's always refreshing to attend conferences. I'll present two of my research projects at the AGU Fall Meeting this week; I'll be happy to discuss them at length. I'm also hitting the job market; if you have any leads or want to connect, feel free to contact me.
Earlier this semester, Alysha Armstrong presented this research at Seismotea (Geology & Geophysics Seismology Seminar), and I was amazed by the work and the results. When I see research as cool as this, I wonder how to break away from imaging to explore other areas of seismology
In a new #BSSA paper, @UUSSquake scientists tackle the problem of detecting small earthquakes in. Yellowstone during times of enhanced activity, when seismic waveforms overlap one another.

The increase in seismicity in West Texas should spark crossborder research to update risk and hazard assesments. This earthquake was felt in many border communities and in the Ciudad Juarez🇲🇽-El Paso🇺🇸 metro area, home of more than 2 million people

The @UUSSquake #utequake outreach project made it to @CollegeGameDay. It's incredible to have this kind of exposure. Thanks to this, we will be able to get more opportunities to share why seismic monitoring is essential and what we can do on short notice to record seismic signals
