After this week's @Railnatter, I've had the pleasure of writing up my proposals for an extensive Leeds (and West Yorkshire) Metro for @leeds_exchange - if you want maps, we've got maps! If you want an explanation of repeat station designs, it's here! Are trams good enough? No!

MAKE THE LOGO MASSIVE wins again. GBR will never look good until every single word and letter is removed from the base livery. YOU DON'T NEED "GBR", THE DOUBLE ARROW IS RIGHT THERE.

It's not going well for discontinuous electrification so far... A lesson for other metro operators that this tech doesn't work. And a warning sign for relying heavily on batteries instead of conventional electrification.
British passenger operator Transport for Wales (TfW) has withdrawn from service and paused the rollout of more class 398 tram-trains deployed on commuter lines serving Cardiff. railjournal.com/fleet/softwa…

Thrilled to see my map published in the recent issue of @RAIL, and this article, which I've been wanting to write for quite some time. I'm not just saying this, but it's a must read for anyone who believes the myth that #HS2 is gold plated or was a politician's vanity project

Delivering a railway where rolling stock & infrastructure are managed together has the potential to be better for customers & taxpayers. Find out more👇 This is an important step. We now need to develop a long term business plan and secure adequate funding. #joineduprailway
For the first time in a generation, rolling stock and infrastructure will be managed together as one system, under Great British Railways’ Rolling Stock and Infrastructure Strategy. It will mean better journeys, value for money and a simpler railway that’s easier to run.

The recent Department for Transport post on battery-electric trains, coupled with the recent order for TPE, is a worrying indicator as to where the Rolling Stock and Infrastructure Strategy is headed. Battery-electric trains aren't a viable solution for freight. 🧵1/8

So, what have we learnt from the DfT's latest taxpayer-funded advertising? In a nutshell, they are trying to justify bad decision-making to any avoid long-term investment. (1/4)

GOOD THINGS: 🦽 low floor train for full level boarding 🚲 4 horizontal bike spaces BAD THINGS: ⭕ TPE is a 125mph intercity service, these trains aren't 📏 200m platforms, 130m trains, we did it again 💰 GBR brand but trains owned privately at high cost
TransPennine Express is to receive in 2034 29 five-car battery electric Adessia Stream trains built by Alstom in Derby, DfT said tonight. Rock Rail will own the £1bn fleet which features level boarding and 3 wheelchair spaces, leasing it to TPE. Production starts in 2028.

It's an outrage that @railandroad doesn't make use of its enforcement powers on accessibility. Worse still, the Railways Bill will remove ORR's responsibility for this area and give it to the much weaker @TransportFocus, which won't even have its own enforcement powers.
Replying to @LordOrk
In 2025, over 525 complaints were made to Southeastern regarding accessibility by 258 passengers In 2024, 292 passengers made 560 complaints What will it take for @railandroad to demand @Se_Railway Improvement Plan? Anyone would think they don’t care about disabled people

In 2025, John Edgley (@NetworkRail’s chief engineer of infrastructure and asset strategy) stood up and showed that graph to a conference of engineers. He said the following words, and they should be seen as a stark warning:

There is no greater driver of economic growth than good public transport links. Look at the boom of the Elizabeth Line. People who whinge about the costs of it are just short-sighted morons. Ignore them and build everything. HS2. HS3. Crossrail 2. Trams in every city. Just do it.

Hearing that Cambridge South has recorded 110k passengers in its first month. Compare that with Cambridge North which through various factors only reached 320k in its first year.
