Some stories are bigger than a crop.
Harvest has wrapped up for the 8th Annual Fiske Community Growing Project, but the roots of this incredible effort stretch back decades. What started in the late 1970s, when local farmers worked together to send surplus grain to famine-stricken countries, has grown into a lasting legacy of generosity through the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.
Today, that legacy continues thanks to the dedication of local farmers, volunteers, supporters, and the vision of those who came before them. Together, they're proving that a small Saskatchewan community can make a difference far beyond its own borders.
This video follows the project through the full crop year and celebrates the people behind it. The ones who seed, spray, harvest, volunteer, organize and give their time so others can have hope.
We're proud that Western Sales can play a small part in supporting a project that reflects the very best of rural Saskatchewan.
🌾 170 acres. 🧑🌾 One community. 🌍 A worldwide impact.

Conservation agriculture not only boosts yield but also enhances soil fertility by fixing nitrogen naturally. As mulch decomposes, it transforms into rich organic matter, nurturing the soil for sustained growth and healthier crops.

The Origins and Evolution of the Canadian Food Grains Bank
Terry and Holden talk with Rick Block about the origins of the Canadian Food Grains Bank, which was born out of an initiative in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Mennonite farmers in Saskatchewan and Manitoba had excess grain that was not being exported due to quotas, and they advocated to the Canadian government to find a way to send this grain as food aid to areas experiencing famine, such as the Indian subcontinent and East Africa. This led to the establishment of the Canadian Food Grains Bank, an umbrella agency that now includes 15 agencies working with the Canadian government to provide emergency food assistance and support long-term food security around the world.

Our soils face erosion & dryness, but Conservation Agriculture with mulch is the solution.
Mulch boosts soil health, prevents erosion, retains moisture, suppresses weeds, and captures carbon. Let’s protect our land for a sustainable future!
