Went out with a high note at this year’s CIFF. “Dao” is over three hours long, at least partially improvised, and has an organic breeziness that is hard to replicate.
I think the premise of “Head to Head” is very promising and the film-within-a-film-within-a-film structure is very intriguing. But I don’t think the film goes beyond the surface level. The white-hot anger is palpable but there’s not much else.
Ira Sachs’ “The Man I Love” might be his best yet. His nebulous plotting allows the ensemble vast amounts of freedom to shade in their characters. They feel fresher than they might appear on the surface. Sturridge, Ford, Hall fantastic. Malek’s inherent strangeness used well.
