There are real limits to what we can accomplish in a world where people believe nothing they do really matters.
My book (!) is about how we wound up in a place where millions of people feel like spectators in their own lives. And how we course correct. Because we can.

“Every relevant medical society recommends against screening asymptomatic men for testosterone deficiency, because it is akin to scouring a hotel room with a black light: you’re going to find a lot of stuff of indeterminate significance that you wish you hadn’t seen.”
I wrote about Pete Hegseth’s testosterone obsession for The New Yorker newyorker.com/science/annals…
since August I’ve been making a series called “Decoding Media” trying to do this. I’ve talked about how journalists work with PR, how corrections work, on background/off the record, on “having an angle” and audience capture

An anti-robotaxi group called the People First Transportation Alliance has become active in DC in recent months.
But exactly who is behind the group remains unclear.

Did Elizabeth Holmes coming after me and my sources with everything she had and threatening to sue us out of existence bias me? Yes.
Replying to @JohnCarreyrou @nytimes
I am a big fan of you, don’t get me wrong. but My question is do you think you have any bias as a result of your experience as a journalist in this case?
i've always found the narrative that 3+ kids were "status symbols" strange. similarly, the discourse earlier this month re: that GQ article got notably hostile between those with 2 vs. 1.
people seem p uncharitable to parents of varying family sizes, maybe parents most of all
Replying to @mtkonczal
Is this a new status symbol? I don't think so. It looks more like children fall for all families except the 1% over the past 30 years.
Maybe the things that made children more difficult for the 99% just bounced right off the 1%? /2
The public option got cut from the Affordable Care Act, but an obscure waiver that was included has since been used by 3 states to launch their own public options.
I wrote about these policy experiments and what they could mean for 2028 and beyond:

New: Republicans are sharpening their knives ahead of Election Day — and many have already decided privately who they will blame if results don’t go their way.
So far, no one is safe from taking heat.

"The driving point behind what we were doing was to set hospital prices," Michael Conway, Colorado's insurance commissioner said. "That's what we were driving towards, and that's what we did."
With health care costs soaring, public options are getting a new look. I wrote about the three states that have launched their own in recent years, and what this could mean for 2028 and beyond

In Colorado, enrollment in their public option went from about 14 percent of the state marketplace’s customers in 2023, the first year, to a third in 2024, to roughly half today

Eyewitness to the Israeli settler attack on Palestinians and @washingtonpost photographer Heidi Levine tells me, “It was barbaric…there were maybe 5 or 6 surrounding her. They had clubs…And they were standing over her, beating her over and over, it was truly horrific. I was worried that she was going to be killed.” - @infinite_jaz
speaking of which, this piece today from Capital Commonsense is really valuable and clarifying about why DC’s fiscal situation is so rough right now open.substack.com/pub/capita…
