We’re excited to participate in this roundtable on a critical topic! #EarlyLiteracy #PreventReadingFailure
REGISTER | May 14: Fewer than half of California students are reading by third grade. Even fewer Black and Latino students meet that standard.
What’s standing in the way of ensuring all kids, including English learners, read by third grade? #caedu #caleg

“I am worrisomely seeing in California that there is becoming more loyalty to past methods that have been shown to be ineffective for our most struggling readers. We can never put loyalty to past methods over loyalty to our children.” - Dr. Maryanne Wolf

Speaking as a teacher, having a quality curriculum to implement means I can leverage my time to give specific feedback, intervene, examine progress, collaborate/reflect…
Don’t make us develop our own instruction. There are much wiser uses of our time and talent.

We are grateful to #AB2222 author @AsmBlancaRubio , co-sponsors @DDCalifornia and @FamsInSchools, all of the bill's co-authors, and the many advocates who moved the important issue of early literacy forward (1/2).

This is a terrible disservice to California’s 6 million students.

Speaking as a parent, if you honestly believe that making sure teachers have decent curriculum is evil, then your own kids aren't in public schools. Once you see what kids learn, and how widely it varies from classroom to classroom in the same building, you can never unsee it.

Teachers deserve to be prepared with effective, research-backed training and curriculum. Students deserve a public education that guarantees their right to read. @AsmMuratsuchi, will you set a hearing for #AB2222?

What a disappointment. It’s time for everyone to be rowing in the same direction and fight for what our students need and deserve.

Claude Goldenberg, a specialist on English Learner literacy, is one of the leaders speaking out to say that the bill absolutely advances the needs of ELL students:

This misunderstanding about the needs of ELLs is really problematic. @AFTunion’s publications put pressure on @WeAreCTA’s assertions about ELL needs.
How do we close this understanding gap, @BeckyPringle? It’s really not a good look for CTA.

With only 4 in 10 third-graders reading on grade level it is time for comprehensive early literacy reform. #AB2222 (Rubio) is the best path forward to close the reading achievement gap in California.

Selling products that create and exacerbate learning gaps, then lamenting educators inability to identify and fill those gaps... can only be done if you're detached from the collective impact. Or, if the dissonance is too great, point the finger at teachers' poor implementation.
