Victor Davis Hanson with the uncomfortable truth 🔥 “They ethnically cleansed almost a million Jews from Arab countries between 1948–1973. No one talks about that. But only the Palestinians still claim ‘refugee’ status 78 years later. When Poland was recreated, 12 million Germans walked back to Germany. Two million died. You don’t see Germans today waving keys to apartments in Danzig screaming ‘I’m a refugee.’ Cypriots lost 40% of their land to Turkey. Jews from Damascus, Cairo, Baghdad, the Gulf — kicked out, property stolen. None of them still play the eternal refugee card. Israel left Gaza in 2005 with hundreds of millions in greenhouses and infrastructure. What did they do? Looted it. Took $40–50 billion in aid… and built rockets and 500 miles of tunnels instead of a real state. We’re supposed to feel sorry for people who chose this path?” History is not a buffet. You don’t get to pick only the victimhood that serves you.

The Tigray War: What Really Caused It, From the Beginning to Today.
The war in Tigray, northern Ethiopia, was not simply an ethnic conflict, nor was it merely a dispute between two politicians. It was the result of a struggle over political power, competing visions of the Ethiopian state, ethnic federalism, control of the military, historical grievances, and territorial disputes. Regional rivalries and outside involvement then made the conflict much more destructive.
The fighting began on a massive scale in November 2020 between Ethiopia's federal government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), the political movement that had dominated Ethiopian national politics for nearly three decades. Eritrea and forces from Ethiopia's Amhara region also became major participants.
A ceasefire agreement signed in November 2022 ended the principal phase of the war, but it did not resolve every underlying dispute. The political and security situation has remained fragile, with unresolved territorial questions, incomplete disarmament and tensions over the future of Tigray.
To understand the real causes, we need to go back well before 2020.

Facebook, Apple and Google: Are They Building Digital Empires at the Expense of Humanity?
An evidence-based investigation into corporate power, profit incentives, privacy, competition and public accountability.
There are serious reasons to question whether the business practices of Meta, Apple and Google place shareholder returns, market dominance and control over digital infrastructure ahead of certain public interests.
However, the strongest investigation does not simply call these corporations “greedy” or “psychopathic.” Those are moral characterizations, not established legal or clinical findings. A more rigorous approach is to examine the documented conduct, the incentives behind it, the harm alleged or established, and whether the companies changed their practices when confronted.
The central question is this: when a corporation has enormous power over how people communicate, access information, buy products and participate in society, who holds that corporation accountable?

FRANCE'S SOCIAL FAULT LINE-
The Suburbs vs Paris.
Why Does Geography Matter?
Central question:Why did France's 2026 high-school revolt begin in the Paris suburbs rather than central Paris—and why did the political character of the movement change as it spread from Créteil and Seine-Saint-Denis to Lyon, Marseille and other cities?
This episode should not ask:
“Are the suburbs responsible for the unrest?”
It should ask something more consequential:
What social conditions made the suburbs particularly receptive to a school-based revolt, and what happened when that revolt entered very different urban environments?
The geography may be one of the keys to understanding the entire movement.

THE BIG PICTURE-
15. Africa’s Industrialisation Problem
Why Has the Continent Struggled to Turn Raw Materials Into Manufacturing Power?
There is a question that has followed Africa for decades:
Why does a continent with enormous natural resources, a rapidly growing population, vast agricultural potential and increasingly large consumer markets still account for less than 2% of global manufacturing output?
The question has become even more important.
Africa's manufacturing value added increased from about $285 billion in 2020 to $351 billion in 2025.
That sounds impressive.

Why Has the Commonwealth Failed to Become a Major African Economic Force?
Africa is one of the Commonwealth's greatest concentrations of membership, population, resources and future economic potential. Yet the Commonwealth has not become a major force shaping African trade, industrialisation, infrastructure or investment. Why?
The Commonwealth has 21 African member states, representing roughly 40% of Africa's population and about half of the continent's GDP. Across the wider organization are 56 countries and 2.7 billion people.
It also claims an economic advantage: Commonwealth countries have, on average, about 21% lower bilateral trade costs than comparable non-Commonwealth partners.

Was Taiwan Ever Governed by the People's Republic of China?
A historical, legal and comparative investigation.
Central question: Does inheriting China's international representation automatically confer sovereignty over Taiwan?
The starting point is a historical fact with major legal implications: the People's Republic of China (PRC), established on 1 October 1949, has never exercised governmental administration over Taiwan. The Republic of China (ROC), whose government retreated to Taiwan after losing control of mainland China in the Chinese Civil War, has governed the island since 1945.
But that fact does not, by itself, settle the question of sovereignty. International law distinguishes between administering a territory, representing a state internationally, inheriting a state's legal rights and establishing a valid territorial title.
The central issue is therefore not simply whether Beijing has governed Taiwan. It has not. The deeper question is whether the PRC can establish a legal entitlement to Taiwan through the continuity of the Chinese state, historical territorial claims, postwar agreements and international recognition.

Why Does Mainland China Claim Taiwan as Its Own? The History, Law, Politics and Geopolitics Behind the Dispute.
The answer involves a civil war that never reached a comprehensive political settlement, competing claims of state continuity, the history of Japanese colonial rule, disputed interpretations of postwar international agreements, nationalism, military strategy and the international recognition of governments.
The crucial distinction is that the People's Republic of China (PRC), which governs mainland China, claims sovereignty over Taiwan, but it has never exercised governmental control over Taiwan itself. Taiwan is governed separately by the Republic of China (ROC), with its own elected government, military, currency, courts and immigration system. These are facts about how the two governments operate; the ultimate legal status of Taiwan remains internationally contested.
Let's examine the issue step by step, separating historical facts from the competing legal arguments and political objectives.

France Student Protest Monitor-
Executive assessment.
The main new development is that protest groups have called for another nationwide mobilisation on Saturday, 31 October, followed by a national strike on Thursday, 5 November. The movement is expanding beyond students to include workers, teachers, firefighters and other groups dissatisfied with living costs and public services.
The latest reporting, published on Sunday, 25 October, confirms that Saturday's demonstrations were smaller than those on 17 October according to official estimates, but they still attracted hundreds of thousands of participants.
Three developments deserve attention:

Following the official publication of its Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) implementing the Comprehensive Outbound Investment National Security Act (COINS Act), the U.S. Department of the Treasury released additional regulatory guidance expanding the reach of the U.S. Outbound Investment Security Program (OISP):
Expanding Tech Categories & Country Risk: While the initial framework targeted U.S. capital flows into Chinese AI, advanced microelectronics, and quantum systems, the expanded proposed rule adds advanced biotechnologies, supercomputing/high-performance computing (HPC), and hypersonics to the restricted list. Additionally, the list of "countries of concern" has been expanded beyond China, Hong Kong, and Macau to include Russia, Iran, North Korea, and Cuba.

Should Business Owners Be Able to Use Major Social-Media Platforms to Advance Personal Political Interests Without Additional Transparency? This question concerns the intersection of private ownership, freedom of expression, media power, and democratic accountability. A business owner has a legitimate interest in expressing political opinions. But when that person also controls a major social-media platform, the situation becomes more complicated. The owner may not simply be another participant in public debate; they may also possess substantial influence over the infrastructure through which millions of people communicate, obtain information, and debate political issues. The central distinction is between using a platform to express a personal opinion and using control over the platform to influence the conditions under which political opinions are distributed, promoted, or restricted. These are different activities, and they raise different questions about transparency.

CHINA'S TECHNOLOGY BELT AND ROAD. How Beijing Is Exporting an Industrial and Digital Ecosystem. China's Belt and Road Initiative is often described in terms of ports, railways, highways, power plants and mines. But there is another Belt and Road developing alongside the physical one. It runs through: 5G networks → fibre-optic cables → data centres → cloud computing → satellites → AI → digital payments → smart cities → industrial equipment → EVs → batteries → robotics. This is the Digital Silk Road—the technology dimension of the Belt and Road Initiative. Its significance goes well beyond selling Chinese products overseas. The larger strategic possibility is that China could increasingly export the technological infrastructure on which other countries' economies operate. That is a much more consequential form of influence. 1. The Belt and Road is evolving The first phase of the BRI was heavily associated with physical infrastructure: railways; ports; roads; power plant...

ACT II — THE POLITICAL MACHINE. 8 When Protest Becomes Political Power. How Does Spontaneous Anger Become Electoral Energy? This is the episode where the documentary should move from street politics to electoral politics. The central question is no longer simply: Who organized the protest? It becomes: How does a political organization turn a spontaneous social grievance into a durable political constituency? That question is especially significant because France is heading toward its 2027 presidential election, and Jean-Luc Mélenchon has declared his candidacy. Recent reporting places the student protests directly inside that emerging electoral contest. But the documentary should investigate mechanisms, rather than assume that LFI is deliberately manipulating students for votes. 1. THE POLITICAL CONVERSION There is a recognizable political sequence: GRIEVANCE “Our schools are failing us.” MOBILISATION “We have to do something.” IDENTITY “We are the generation be...
