Well, we’ve come through the storms, relatively unscathed (thank goodness) and Ronald and the gang are busy smoothing down ruffled feathers this morning.

Why should a pensioner on a £13K income be exempt from income tax when a person of working age is not? Those of working age do not receive free travel or all sorts of other discounts to which pensioners are entitled. We do not exempt people from tax based on how many dependents they have, or how much housing in their area costs, so why exempt individuals based on age?
John Healey, the chancellor, is expected to announce a 3.9 per cent rise to the full state pension while protecting those on lower incomes from income tax thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…

In medieval tradition Alfred the Great was an emblematic figure of wisdom, credited with wise sayings and proverbs. His very name suggests 'Elf-wisdom', and the works linked with him often explore what wisdom means. He has a key role in my upcoming book... xitter.cf/UppsalaBooks/status/21…

Another piece on the Gill/Craven report on the C of E finances in the Telegraph. "Where is the logic in running a charity which increases its administrative costs relentlessly while the donor base is shrinking? This is a fatal flaw." telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/10…

Today is the anniversary of the death of Alfred the Great, who died in 899. Famous for defending his kingdom against Viking invasion, Alfred also strove to rebuild learning and education among the English - to restore both their 'wealth and wisdom': aclerkofoxford.blogspot.com/…

25th October 1415 - The Battle of Agincourt 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Outnumbered and exhausted, King Henry V and his English army faced the might of French chivalry on a muddy battlefield in northern France. Against overwhelming odds, the English held firm. Their longbowmen unleashed volleys of arrows as the French advanced through the mud. Faith, discipline, courage and sheer English grit carried the day. Before battle, Henry and his men prayed to God. After their victory, they gave thanks through the 𝑻𝒆 𝑫𝒆𝒖𝒎. The words of 𝑵𝒐𝒏 𝑵𝒐𝒃𝒊𝒔 𝑫𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒆 declare: "Not unto us, O Lord, but unto thy name give glory." They fought beneath the Cross of St George, trusting in God and standing shoulder to shoulder. "Cry God for Harry, England, and Saint George!" 611 years later, we remember the Englishmen who fought and died at Agincourt. This is our history. These are our forefathers. Honour them 🏹 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

It may be that the clocks go back tonight and that the wind’s howling and the rain’s horizontal but at least the last of the summer roses are GLORIOUS.
