Just so we are clear: ICE went into a day care center—a private business—without a judicial warrant, and unlawfully kidnapped a worker in front of parents and children. Our taxpayer dollars are being used to violate our rights, terrorize our communities, and traumatize children. It is time to defund ICE.

This morning, ICE unlawfully kidnapped a day care worker in front of parents and children. We’re demanding accountability for every way that DHS is violating our rights, breaking the law, and acting with impunity. We must resist. WATCH. youtube.com/live/ahjU7LHZn24…

The reality of these GenAI tools is that those with deep domain expertise get more out of them than those with less. This is true for coding, and likely for other professions. More on this "knowledge paradox": newsletter.pragmaticengineer… as coined by @addyosmani at:

This is how Copilot Workspace works. Covered 8 months ago in @Pragmatic_Eng at newsletter.pragmaticengineer… I personally think it's a clever workflow that aims to make devs more productive (and not replace them, like tools like Devin advertise themselves to the business)

This release is a big deal because: 1. It's the second major agentic coding workflow released with public access. (First one was Devin) 2. Pricing. Unlike Devin that charges $500/month right now. Copilot Workspace Preview is free. 3. GH integration. A big sell+onboarding win!
There is no more waitlist for GitHub Copilot Workspace—the most advanced agentic editor. Start building with agents today.

Thrilled to be MCing #RailsWorld and representing @github! Come say hi if you’re in Toronto.
We're incredibly grateful that @github is not only a Core member of the Rails Foundation, but also a Platinum Sponsor at this year's #RailsWorld. They'll be hosting Track 1 this year, and have some great prizes to give away. Read more here: rubyonrails.org/2024/9/5/git…

Teams with one of the above mentalities consistently deliver more value for the business, iterate faster, and stop work on projects that have little to no value faster. But that same team is less “utilised” when you measure the easy-to-measure metrics like # PRs or JIRA tickets.

Eng team 1: “We do what product or the business folks tells us to do. Not our job to decide what we work on!” Eng team 2: “We work with product and the business folks to help decide what to do. Our job includes making sure we work on the right thing for the business.”

A curious thing I noticed: it's so rare for an engineering manager or Staff+ engineer to have a *direct* chat with a business stakeholder. Most rely on PMs to do this, and do the "translation." And yet, talking with the business directly is such a high-leverage activity for eng.

Went to a concert last night and my friend asked chatgpt to write a punk song about CI/CD. You’re welcome.

It's been a stressful week. What do you do to put work away at the end of the day? It's something I coach EMs and ICs on a lot. tiktok.com/@rmillerwebster/v…

"Wartime" (stressful times) vs "peacetime" (good times) at the workplace. It's easy to tell the difference once you've been through both. Here are some observations on how people succeed in each environment. What else have you seen work or not work in each type of environment?

No one should be shocked by this. With the rush to AI, we in tech need to remember lessons we've already learned about bias and safety. xitter.cf/TheRoot/status/1637861…

If you're feeling like you need support, I highly suggest you set up a coffee chat call with a peer! Sometimes, you need to chat with someone who deeply understands your unique challenges and can give you sound advice that others can't.
