This is good.
When you are live on an earnings call and the CEO or CFO pauses for five seconds before answering a question about accounts receivables, you feel something. You cannot explain it cleanly. You just know that pause meant something. Read the transcript two hours later and that pause is gone entirely. The transcript says he answered the question. It does not say he needed five seconds to decide how. When you visit management in person and the receptionist has been there for twenty-two years, that tells you something. When the parking lot is full at 4pm on a Friday, that tells you something. When the CEO walks you through the factory floor and he has unscripted personal dialogue with the line workers with what looks like genuine respect rather than performed deference, that tells you something significant about how this place operates. None of that is in the 10-K. microcapclub.com/the-last-mo…

A bit on PHP… Some of the most consequential enterprise technology is also the least visible. Even long-running, stable platforms can be put at risk by the speed and volume of new vulnerabilities found via AI-driven discovery. Vulnerabilities like the ones affecting PHP today are a reminder of just how deeply open source is woven into the systems that run global business, and just how fast the security clock runs now. Researchers used AI to help find these flaws, but attackers are using the same tools to exploit them in minutes. This is what Lightwell was built to solve. It combines AI-driven automation with human engineering to identify, validate and remediate vulnerabilities in open source dependencies. IBM and Red Hat are backing it with a $5 billion commitment and more than 20,000 engineers. Instead of forcing an upgrade of the entire stack, Lightwell applies critical fixes directly into the production versions companies already run. We contribute the latest upstream, and provide backporting for all versions in Lightwell Network. Critical vulnerabilities will continue across the open source ecosystem. The challenge isn’t just finding vulnerabilities, but shortening the time between discovery and remediation. Lightwell was built to close that gap.

Progress, not perfection.
$IBM back on track after last quarter. Strength across the business and record FCF. AI growth doing the heavy lifting.

Welcome!
Spending the day tomorrow in NYC with many on the $IBM senior leadership team tomorrow, including @ArvindKrishna and @robdthomas. What questions would you have for them? What recommendations would you make? Thanks for the goodie box! Of course it’s blue. I can eat the macro bar and the @IBM water. Maybe the jalapeño popcorn and the almonds.

Act with agency
I can’t stress enough how little an idea matters compared to the agency of the people executing the idea. I have had the privilege of knowing and sometimes even working with some of the most successful people (by various metrics). The difference between mediocre and excellent work and outcomes is predominantly one of agency. In practice this means: they dont wait for things to happen to them they go out and make things happen for them. They don’t wait for someone else to do something, for someone to teach them, for someone to give them the path, etc. They just go out and find a way to do it. I think the single biggest superpower these people have is the realization/belief that the world around them is completely mutable. Most everything that happens is because a person made it happen. I used to tell people to look around the room you’re sitting in. Look at everything. Every noun. It almost all exists because a person willed it into existence. Nothing is stopping you from doing the same. I see people online all the time dismissing someone else’s success because “I had that idea first” or whatever. I mean… yeah? If so then the difference is… you. So a bit of a self own whenever I hear that. Number one tip: act with agency.

It’s possible that ‘AI will take all jobs’ will prove to be the biggest lie of them all. ‘Change jobs’ is one thing, but ‘take jobs’ is a whole different level of delusion (which seems to ignore demographics).
All this fear around AI taking your job misses a huge part of the story... Labour force participation was falling long before AI showed up because it follows the birth rate with a twenty year lag, and birth rates have been falling for decades. So machines are mostly filling the gap left by people retiring or leaving the workforce anyway. That's a very different picture from the one you're being sold. The old GDP equation ran on population growth plus productivity growth... synthetic labour removes that ceiling entirely. Productivity keeps compounding without needing more people to do it. That's the Economic Singularity, and it changes the whole equation.

Translation: our gross margins are getting competed down to 0 by open source models and our capex burn rate is too high. Let’s maintain our margins with regulatory capture, ban open source models, and slow down the capex arms race. All with a virtue signaling cherry on top.
We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so. Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training.
