Ants are animals. Organic substances. Per se unities. natural beings. They aren’t software running on an artificial collection of multiple natural substances. It’s not about “humans r special”.
I am puzzled as to why my fellow theologically orthodox Christians are *adamant* that the probability of AI consciousness is 0% rather than 0.001%. What is the big deal if we admit that AI is potentially but almost certainly not conscious, rather than impossibly conscious? What do we lose? Ants are conscious, for goodness' sake. That doesn't diminish our dignity in any way.

This brilliant man was on the team that gave Richard Dawkins his PhD in 1966. But he now has devastating criticisms of Dawkins' principal assertions, much to Dawkins' prickly dismay.
In this episode of Socrates in Oxford, host Eric Metaxas is joined by Denis Noble, the brilliant physiologist and biologist, as he challenges one of the most deeply rooted assumptions in modern science: that everything can ultimately be reduced to its smallest parts.

Remember, "judicial review," the supposed power of courts to decide if an act of the executive or legislature complies with the Constitution, is an extra-constitutional fiction created by the Supreme Court itself. Ignoring the Court is constitutional, rational, and necessary.

Thomas footnote: T. Aquinas, Summa Theologica: [F]oreigners “were not at once admitted to citizenship” because “if foreigners were allowed to meddle with the affairs of a nation as soon as they settled down in its midst, many dangers might occur, since the foreigners not yet having the common good firmly at heart might attempt something hurtful to the people.”

A good reading of the Venona Papers proves how inaccurate the term "Red Scare" was and is.

The Texas State Board of Education will meet next week for a final battle in establishing new history standards for the next generation of Texas students. We must preserve our history before it gets rewritten by the radical groups trying to manipulate it.

Well now, look what we have here. Something advertising itself as a "center for the defense of academic freedom" is gearing up a campaign of vilification against programs that are revitalizing civic education at colleges and universities around the nation and helping to ensure that students are exposed to a diverse range of viewpoints. I suppose it's not surprising that people who have enjoyed a virtual ideological monopoly would fight tooth and nail to keep it. That's how monopolists work.
NEW: The Mellon Foundation gave $1.5 million to establish a "center for the defense of academic freedom." In audio I've obtained, the group's leader says his goal is to undermine the newly launched classical civics centers: "map who these f---ers are... and knock them out." 🧵

Is this something you know about @ArchbishopGomez? You must recognize the shame this brings upon the whole Catholic Church, let alone your own jurisdiction? I pray you will intervene for good governance and witness.

This is an important intervention from @PatrickDeneen on the latest attempt to “gatekeep” the New Right — this time at @ISI, last time at @Heritage, next time, we shall see. A generation which once emphasized gratitude conserved none of the goods for which human beings are typically grateful. Their liberal principles failed to prevent the hollowing out of our nation, and as a result they have lost power — and they will not regain it on their terms. An American Golden Age isn’t going to be forged by those who once regularly cancelled the likes of Patrick Buchanan. It’s not going to be forged by a blind preference for the priorities of other countries — it is only going to be forged by our love for “the American thing” — that distinctive Res Americana which has been provided by God’s Providence can only be preserved by us. If there is gatekeeping, let it be at our actual borders — and also at the borders of our Faith, at the borders which provide for booming families. Let us gatekeep for safe cities and homegrown industry, let us be vigilant about main streets which fly American flags and no other. Let us be united in a higher kind of gatekeeping — only a bigger, and dare I say, Christian vision for America can unite us.🇺🇸
The so-called conservatives who penned this letter demonstrate no actual historical knowledge. For starters, for most of its history I.S.I. hosted a wide variety of conservative voices in its programming. I was regularly a faculty mentor and speaker in its Honors Program from roughly 2005-2015. The notion that I represent some new radical presence is a bald faced lie. It was only under the Presidency of Chris Long that a narrow ideological litmus test was applied - only right liberals need apply - and I, among others, was purged for over a decade. Johnny Burtka restored I.S.I. to its longstanding commitment to engaging a wide range of conservative voices. While I was hesitant at first to accept his invitations, over the past several years I have become deeply impressed by his commitment to fostering genuine intellectual exchange. Second, the charge that I.S.I. has ceased engaging students on campuses reveals a stunning level of ignorance about the institution that these gentlemen supposedly guided. I’m one of scores of faculty who are regularly invited to campuses by student groups, visits which are entirely funded by I.S.I. I have spoken at dozens of campuses over the past five years - including a lecture with wonderful students at Yale just two weeks ago. Johnny Burtka is to be commended for expanding the reach of I.S.I. by engaging with new media, while retaining its traditional campus activities. The effort to cancel all but “right liberals” is a bald and desperate power play by a discredited generation of self-serving Boomers. They leave ruins in their wake that others are girded and keen to clean up.
