Rights & freedoms are not woke. Rights & freedoms are not nice-to-haves. Rights & freedoms are a defining factors of being human. Rights & freedoms can be complex to grasp and often conflict with each other, but not having rights & freedoms can be dangerously dehumanising.

ChatGPT es la peligrosa intersección del capitalismo de datos con una enorme, devastadora y debilitante crisis de angustia y soledad. Nada me asusta más que Sam Altman como guardián de nuestra salud mental colectiva.
In the future, once the robustness of our models will exceed some threshold, we will have *wildly effective* and dirt cheap AI therapy. Will lead to a radical improvement in people’s experience of life. One of the applications I’m most eagerly awaiting.

The CJEU decision in @Kartellamt v Meta exactly contradicts the Irish DPC 2021 Meta draft decision. The DPC rejected arguments from @maxschrems. Instead it accepted Meta's. But Schrems' arguments (vindicated by the EDPB) are precisely what the CJEU has now again repeated.

Ultimately, boundless surveillance leading to the feeling of being continuously monitored is the argument the CJEU uses to rule that online personalized advertising cannot be based on "legitimate interests" as a lawful ground (in the Bundeskartellamt/Meta judgment).

"The personalised advertising by which the online social network Facebook finances its activity, cannot justify, as a legitimate interest pursued by Meta Platforms Ireland, the processing of the data at issue, in the absence of the data subject’s consent. "

A fundamental rights approach to personal data protection and privacy in full display today at the European Courts. The ECtHR also had an important judgment today against the use of Facial Recognition in public spaces used to idenrify a man tgat was protesting.
ECtHR: Authorities’ use of facial-recognition technology against a man following his protest on public transport breached ECHR Article 8 (respect for private life) and Article 10 (freedom of expression). He had been identified and later located by facial-recognition technology.

Training an LLM takes about 1 trillion words. That’s about 30,000 years of typing. But where does this data come from? And what does this have to do with the Reddit protests? Here’s how OpenAI trains models on “the entire internet.” 🧵📜

Already bought 5 books (had to restrain myself there), was present at the first EDPB Chair change ever, participated in an amazing workshop by @IsabBarb on privacy threat modelling, attended some other amazing panels, got myself a waffle for breakfast...
