I’ll be speaking at TEDxJacksonville 2027 on Saturday, January 16, at the Lazzara Performance Hall, University of North Florida. A decade ago I coined Techistentialism - the idea that technological and existential conditions can no longer be separated. The questions technology raises about choice, agency, and what it means to decide are no longer abstract philosophy. They are daily, practical, and urgent. My talk takes on the prevailing fear about AI: that machines will become smarter than we are. I think the nearer danger runs the other way. As we outsource more of our decisions to algorithms, human judgment atrophies from disuse. We risk opting out of thinking altogether. That is the Intelligence Shift - machines moving from predicting to deciding - and the question I’m bringing to the stage: as machines increasingly think and act for us, do we keep the agency to decide for ourselves?
