In Fahrenheit 451, the chief book-burner, Captain Beatty, describes how reading became obsolete because the public demanded increasingly fast-paced entertainments, and those entertainments slowly corroded their ability to think. “Books cut shorter. Condensations. Digests, tabloids. Everything boils down to the gag, the snap ending. Classics cut to fit fifteen-minute radio shows, then cut again to fill a two-minute book column … Many were those whose sole knowledge of Hamlet was a one-page digest in a book that claimed, ‘Now at last you can read all the classics.’ … School is shortened, discipline relaxed, philosophies, histories, languages dropped, English and spelling gradually neglected, finally almost completely ignored. Life is immediate, the job counts, pleasure lies all about after work. Why learn anything save pressing buttons, pulling switches?” In this passage Ray Bradbury foretells the intellectual hollowing out of the working class, the advent of AI-generated “summaries” of classic novels, the attention-frying culture of short-form video, the relaxation of educational standards into non-existence. All of this in a book published in 1953.
Starting to really understand why a core theme of dystopian novels is that nobody reads

I’m in love with this sentence: “One of the most underrated skills you can learn is the ability to ignore your mood and stick with the plan.”

Walmart's CEO received $29.24 million in annual compensation. Walmart employs over 2 million people. Take his entire compensation and distribute it equally among employees, and each gets less than $15 a year, or roughly 0.7 cents an hour. Now raise everyone's wages by $5 an hour and you're looking at over $20 billion annually. This is why understanding basic arithmetic matters more than being outraged by big numbers.
The economy apparently collapses if a cashier makes $25 an hour but survives just fine when a CEO makes $25 million.

A Pakistani boy once told the Muslim Women's Network that his community "shares" girls: “My mate called me and said ‘Bro I have a surprise for you, come over to this house.’ When I got there 15 of them were sitting in the living room. My mate told me to go upstairs for my surprise. "When I went into the bedroom, another friend was doing this girl. The lads went up one by one and took turns and while they were waiting they were calling their mates, cousins and uncles to come over and join in and showing off. "Others turned up too including two older men who were taxi drivers, who went straight upstairs. One older man said I am going to call my son over so he can practice on her and later his 15-year-old son arrived in his uniform. "Everyone took turns and it took 6 hours. I did get concerned and said, ‘the girl is going to get broke, who will marry her?” The girl is not paid but she gets looked after, she is given food and the boys make sure she gets home safely if it gets late. "There are set days Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays but some of my friends don’t like doing stuff like that on a Friday because it is Juma (holy day) and they go mosque.” Pimping a girl out to your cousins and children is the norm in Pakistani communities in Britain. You do not understand these people. We cannot share a country with them. They all have to go.

"justification" or "explanation", that would make a big difference... (e.g. between deportation and therapy).
I will never forget reading about this: There was a case here in Vienna just after the 2015 migration wave, where a Iraqi man rap*d a 10 year old boy at a public swimming pool - he later justified his actions as a "sexual emergency".

("I was justified in doing it because of the emergency" vs "I know it was wrong but I couldn't help it because of the emergency")

Totally ridiculous to ask someone anything (besides "what mix of bank notes would you like?") when they want to withdraw 2.5k of their own money.
I work in fraud and if someone said they needed to withdraw 2.5k in cash for a holiday I'd definitely be asking further questions.

That appears, to me, to be the whole crux of this LTV thing: who, if not "the market", could determine what's "socially necessary"? I'm really happy when my office is clean. But does the labour time of the cleaner produce the same value as the labour time of the heart surgeon? /1
Replying to @AustroLibertari
I understand you might have issues with reading comprehension, but the actual idea is "socially necessary labour time" produces value.

They both work hard and they do a good job. But, obviously, one of them produces much more value per invested time. Even if we include the vastly different time spans required for education. ""socially necessary labour time" is just magic hand waving, I believe, while the /2
