Fabulous news!! What a book this was 😮‍💨. We owe so much Hungarian literature in translation to @caringerel 🖤
Positively delighted to share that EYE OF THE MONKEY by Krisztina Tóth, translated from the Hungarian by Ottilie Mulzet (@caringerel), was shortlisted (!!!) for the 2026 Warwick Prize for Women in Translation (@WarwickPrizeWiT)! “Unsparing, unforgettable.” —Merve Emre

Imaginary evil is romantic and varied; real evil is gloomy, monotonous, barren, boring. Imaginary good is boring; real good is always new, marvelous, intoxicating. Simone Weil.

Correction: 53 per cent of those who voted said yes to a series of questions carefully drafted to elicit a yes, after a months-long government-funded hysteria campaign.

Ditto Spanish. One night in Berlin, I had to choose which of five Spanish-language book launches to attend.

This story is bigger than a book simply being cancelled. Penguin Random House pulled Alana Hadid and Jenan Matari’s book about the Palestinian experience after clashing with them over how to tell Palestine’s story. Apparently, even a children’s book about Palestine needs a disclaimer making sure everyone knows October 7 was illegal, while the Nakba, occupation and decades of dispossession are up for editorial debate. Alana and Jenin eventually walked away rather than publish a version they couldn’t stand behind. Imagine having to fight a publisher just to tell your own people’s story. Thankfully, Palestinian-owned Interlink Books will publish it in 2027.
