HS Athletes: Make your coach's life easy by...
- Looking at the heat sheets and figuring out when you should start your warm-up. Confirm with them, but do the work first.
- When your race is over ask if they need help with anything, possibly getting splits for teammates.

Coaching is not about prescribing and dictating.
It's about creating situations where the athlete is challenged to figure it out. You nudge them along, but if you always give them the answer, you aren't actually teaching. And they aren't learning.

I know this is hard - and maybe it's not realistic...
But getting 20 more minutes of sleep each night for the rest of the season will make a huge impact on your racing (as much as killer workouts will).
Maybe less Snap and Insta and Facetime after practice? 😉
Let's go!

Endurance sport is mental training.
You are alone in your head for long periods of time with ever increasing levels of discomfort. You have a concrete goal that half your mind is screaming to abandon.
You repeat this day after day and have no option but to figure it out.

The world would be a better place if more of the look for hacks, hustle culture, and optimize everything folks read Once A Runner.

The growth of the administration class is a major problem in many sectors.
When you put people in position to manage, they are going to manage
Thus, more rules, red tape, administrative BS.
When we get too far from teaching/coaching/the thing that matters, we lose perspective

This is my “usual” warmup before races. I start about an hour out from gun time.
- activation drills (wall swings, band work, hip stretch, glute bridges)
- 15 min jog
- 2 minute “uptempo pickup” normally 5:20-5:00 pace)
- 1 min jog
- 3x20 seconds on/ 40 seconds off until I

Not getting sufficient sleep, hydration, and failure to limit life stressors have stopped more dreams in their tracks than mileage ever has. You’re not overtraining, you’re under recovering. – at Los Alamos, NM

Thought I’d share this. This is a lightly edited version of a letter I wrote to a very special athlete I coached a few years ago.

Competing when you are in the race or have a shot is easy.
Being a true competitor is being able to put out the same effort even when you are losing, and there's little hope of a victory.

A great, not good, great HS or college XC team is powered by a non-manufactured bond between its core members, a real pact.
It's the only path to greatness
If you've ever been part of that special group you know the feeling. If you think you've been part of it all, likely not.

Resist the urge to always step in.
Let people figure things out. Support them. But let them figure out how to navigate some of the challenges that come with sport. Look for your spots to step in when needed.
Don’t be the overbearing person who doesn't make space for growth.

Athletes: Expect the unexpected in races.
Be ready to cover moves in both the 1600 and 3200. You don’t want to get gapped and run alone - you must keep contact with the runners in front of you to race to your fitness less
The quote below is powerful reminder of this.
