We should take away 5% of top economists citations to do with what we wish, and disingenuously assert if it works we totally won’t do it again.
What amazes me is the attitude of so many of the centibillionaires.
A 5% tax will not make any difference to the way they live. Their spending may be extravagant, but it is still much less than their (correctly measured) income.
They know that, as gifted as some of them indeed are, they have benefited from extreme luck (and the help of the state, and, to speak like an economist, monopoly rents).
They know that their effective tax rate is low, relative to what many others pay.
They know that extreme inequality is extremely unpopular, and can lead to political unrest, backlash, or worse.
They must admit that, morally, it is hard to argue for a society in which some become obscenely wealthy, while so many are poor and see their income stagnate.
They typically have not indicated that they are building their wealth to eventually make the world a better place.
But they are still willing to fight the tax, spending hundreds of millions in California to avoid paying the tax. Why?
They simply think what is theirs is theirs, end of story.
They believe in the slippery slope, and if they do not take a stand on this levy, the government will come back for more.
They hate the state and the notion that their money will be misused?
Or?

Why does this keep happening
It is a strange world.
Because 5.7 million people live in three small Baltic countries (whose total size is less than a Chinese Tier II city). and whose half of the population lives in Europe, and another third are Russians who cannot get citizenship, and because they have traumas and bad memories of the Soviet rule, the entire world of 8 billion people should go into a nuclear apocalypse and die.

So we can be more like France, where young people are so grateful for the high tax rates on the rich that they incinerate public infrastructure.
former vox editors making a serious effort to figure out how the left went so crazy from 2016 to 2021.
leave it mostly as a ruin, but make it safe to enter, and turn it into a Victims of Communism memorial
A few hours after watching the first two episodes, I have come to the conclusion that The Patron in VisionQuest is Agatha. Spoilers.
The LP over time has evolved into “what the Republicans are doing, but stupider and crazier at any given moment.”
I honestly do try to get excited about Libertarian candidates, as they generally come closest to my views. But the LP candidate for Governor in Arkansas has made two of his biggest issues... ending school choice and bringing back firing squads? No thanks
