"There is a mismatch between the feature vector and the output..." Fantastic new post by Sam Anthony on AV perception, and another good reason to subscribe to his substack apperceptive.substack.com/p/…

Pedestrians are not a part of the automated driving systems they might interact with, like a human driver is when using ADAS, but some of the same human factors challenges still emerge when pedestrians and fully autonomous vehicles interact. Here, Sam looks at feedback problems.

The unique framing that @sam_e_anthony proposes here is a great way to connect two very different aspects of automated vehicles, deepen your understanding of the many challenges that human interaction presents to automation, and understand how new innovations build on past work.

We focus a lot on issues of human factors in partial automation here at PAVE, but we mostly focus on the human role in driver assistance. This new blog post from @perceptive_auto's @sam_e_anthony applies these lessons to a novel group: pedestrians! perceptiveautomata.com/blog-…

I’ve been kicking around some ideas about control theory and pedestrian interactions, and how that’s like the Apollo program, kinda. This was a fun one to write!
What can the Apollo program tell us about #autonomous cars? A lot, it turns out! @sam_e_anthony is kicking off a new #blog series exploring 'control theory.' What is it, and how can it help #autonomousvehicles navigate around pedestrians more effectively? bit.ly/351BxWo

CTO @sam_e_anthony sat down with Business Reporter for an interview titled "The Personification of the Black Box." He discusses #public fears of #autonomousvehicles, the challenges #AVs face understanding #pedestrians, #robotaxi testing, #AI, and more: bit.ly/3oQw9gc

If we are going to have robotaxis, we’re going to want them to be able to pick up passengers. This is surprisingly hard! I wrote a bit about why.
As recent news from #sanfrancisco shows, picking up and dropping off passengers of #autonomousvehicles, in this case #robotaxis, is very difficult. CTO @sam_e_anthony discusses those challenges, and solutions, in our latest #blog post: bit.ly/3oAXov3 #mobility #ai

Will AVs require pedestrians to take extra precautions in order to stay safe? Maybe carry a beacon? @sam_e_anthony of @perceptive_auto provides an unambiguous reply in the latest edition of #AVAnswers

This is pretty wild. Good for @chris_urmson !
Today is a significant step in our journey to deliver the benefits of self-driving technology safely, quickly, and broadly to the world. It also comes at a time when society needs our vision to become a reality more than ever before. /1
#Autonomousvehicles have the potential to deliver greater #safety & #mobility, but the public needs to get on board. Letting #communities judge AV performance is a great way to start: bit.ly/3zQmjgm #PedestrianSafetyMonth #Boston #RoadSafety #drivers #city #pedestrian
As humans we often use our immense intuitive capabilities without even realizing it, which separates us from AVs, explains @sam_e_anthony of @perceptive_auto. Dig deeper into this challenge, and how AVs make up for it, by watching our whole panel: youtu.be/FJTWGSMc1Pw
If people are the beneficiaries of #autonomousvehicles, shouldn’t AVs understand us better? If you missed the #pedestriansafetymonth live panel “How Do AVs See Pedestrians?” with @sam_e_anthony & @PAVECampaign, you can now watch it on demand. bit.ly/3BXJyqW #Boston #ai

We interact with each other based on a shared understanding of what it means to be human. That, says @sam_e_anthony of @perceptive_auto, is the key to making AVs play well with pedestrians. Learn more by watching the whole panel: youtu.be/FJTWGSMc1Pw
