In Yeltsin's Russia, even elite test pilots had to work as taxi drivers and cargo handlers just to make ends meet. There were barely any new aircraft to test.
That was the state of Russian aviation in the 1990s. Factories were struggling, aircraft production had collapsed, and highly trained pilots were taking whatever jobs they could find.
So when test pilot Leonid Chikunov thanked Putin for bringing Russian aviation back to life, he knew exactly what he was talking about. He had lived through those years himself.
"Now we fly practically every day," he told Putin. "Sometimes even on weekends and holidays."

🇺🇦 Welcome to Ukraine, where rules don't exist.
The Ukrainian regime has identified over 130 protesters who gathered at the Azov torture site in Kiev.
27 of them are wanted, some already detained on incitement of unrest and damaging Ukraine's image.
The Kiev regime is resorting to detaining protesters without investigation into Azov. The best part? No one in the EU would challenge this as long as Russia is blamed for the protests.
We live in a world of lies and hypocrisy. Why Russians are banned from sport and not other powers. Yet nothing from western media on this subject, a well coordinated media black out.

Your belief that Trump’s war on Iran was some brilliant strategy to contain China shows how little you understand about geopolitics. Let’s break this down 👇
1. IRAN: Who actually depends on whom?
You correctly point out that China purchases the overwhelming majority of Iran’s exported oil.
But you’ve conveniently ignored the most important question: How much does China actually depend on Iran?
Iran accounts for roughly 7% of China’s crude oil imports.
Think about that. China is absolutely critical to Iran’s oil industry. But Iran is NOT critical to China’s energy security.
There’s a massive difference.
And here’s what you completely missed.
For years, China has been systematically building enormous strategic and commercial oil stockpiles, taking advantage of discounted Russian and Iranian crude while Washington pursued sanctions and confrontation.
China was preparing for precisely the kind of energy crisis that Trump’s war unleashed.
And when the crisis arrived, China had the flexibility to reduce imports and rely more heavily on its inventories, potentially easing competition for scarce oil supplies.
Rather than bringing China to its knees, Washington demonstrated exactly why Beijing has spent years preparing for American geopolitical instability.
2. VENEZUELA: Another spectacular American failure.
You seriously believe Venezuela was some brilliant strategic move to cut off China’s energy supplies?
Give me a break.
Venezuela’s oil infrastructure has suffered from decades of underinvestment and deterioration. Restoring large-scale production requires enormous capital, technical expertise, and years of investment.
Who exactly is going to pay for that?
American oil companies? With Trump’s political future increasingly uncertain and no guarantee of long-term stability?
Good luck.
And let’s not forget how Washington sold its intervention to the American public: democracy, freedom, and helping the Venezuelan people.
Now you’re telling us it was actually about denying China access to oil?
3. GREENLAND: Perhaps your weakest argument of all.
The idea that America needed to seize Greenland to prevent China or Russia from taking control is absurd.
Greenland’s mineral resources are real. But having minerals buried underground and possessing the infrastructure, economics, and technical capabilities to extract and process them are two completely different things.
Greenland faces extraordinary logistical challenges, limited infrastructure, harsh environmental conditions, and enormous development costs.
Meanwhile, China spent DECADES building the world’s most sophisticated rare-earth processing ecosystem.
You don’t magically recreate that industrial capacity by planting an American flag on Greenland.
And you certainly don’t solve America’s decades-long industrial decline by threatening the territory of a NATO ally.
HERE’S THE BIGGER PICTURE.
You think Trump is playing some brilliant geopolitical chess game against China.
I would argue the exact opposite.
His war on Iran was one of the greatest strategic gifts Washington could have handed Beijing.
It exposed America’s willingness to destabilize global energy markets, undermined confidence in American leadership, and gave countries another reason to diversify their economic and diplomatic relationships.
Meanwhile, China continues investing in infrastructure, manufacturing, energy security, and long-term industrial capacity.
That’s the fundamental difference.
China is planning for the next 20 years while Washington keeps creating the next crisis.
And now American voters are delivering their verdict on Trump’s leadership.
You call this “America First.”
I call it a spectacular misunderstanding of how geopolitical power actually works.
You don’t defeat China by destroying other countries. You compete with China by rebuilding your own.
And until Washington understands that distinction, Beijing will keep benefiting from America’s strategic mistakes.
I've always liked you, Matt, but as a Korean, in a country where China's influence runs deep, I find this point very disturbing.
“Pointless war"? Follow the oil.
China buys more than 80% of Iran's shipped oil.
That's 1.38 million barrels a day in 2025, per Kpler.
Nearly every barrel Tehran sells under sanctions goes to Beijing.
Add Venezuela.
More than half of its oil exports went to China too.
Together, Iran and Venezuela supplied about 15-17% of China's crude imports.
Much of it was cheap, sanctioned oil, relabeled "Malaysian" to hide where it came from.
Now Greenland.
China controls about 60% of the world's rare earth mining and over 90% of the processing.
Those minerals go into missiles, fighter jets, EVs and chips. Greenland sits on the Arctic shipping routes Beijing calls the "Polar Silk Road."
So what connects Iran, Venezuela and Greenland?
They're three pillars of China's cheap energy and supply chain. Cut them and you raise the cost of Beijing's military buildup without firing a shot at China.
That is America First.
China is the only rival big enough to replace the U.S.
Letting it fuel up on discount oil from America's enemies is not "restraint."
It's surrender on the installment plan.
Gas prices hurt.
I get it.
But if Beijing runs the world's energy and minerals, groceries won't be the worst thing you can't afford.
Think one move ahead.

This is an extremely dishonest graph, and yet another perfect illustration of how the EU is actively harmed by its own “China experts.” The poster is a Senior Associate Fellow at MERICS (an infamous China Think Tank with a clear hawkish agenda) who edits a newsletter dedicated to China trade.
Given his profile, he knows perfectly well what EU “exports” to Switzerland actually consist of. Yet he’s choosing to mislead.
The catch here is that a huge chunk of EU “exports” to Switzerland is gold being shipped to Swiss refineries for processing before being re-exported elsewhere, including China. Switzerland refines 2/3rds of the world’s gold.
In fact, the Swiss government itself strips gold out of its trade statistics (bazg.admin.ch/en/swiss-forei…) because the distortion is so absurd.
In other words, a massive amount of these "exports" to Switzerland is transit trade, not Swiss consumption. If one were to look at the final destination, a big share of it should actually count as exports to... China!
Which is why this is so dishonest: the poster is pushing a narrative along the lines "China buys ridiculously little from the EU, look it's even less than tiny Switzerland" while literally counting gold that transits through Swiss refineries on its way to China as evidence that... China doesn’t buy enough. You couldn't make it up!

The Republicans didn’t lose because Trump attacked Iran, they lost because Iran had the ability to fight back. Republicans lost because Iran did whatever it needed to do to retain the military capability to impose an economic toll on Americans for the actions of their government.
Simple math. Much cheaper to build data centers in Malaysia than in the US.
4 hrs flight from Malaysia would cover the majority of the world's population that could be served by these data centers.
