Leaf blowers aka the suburban symphony, or the backyard banshees.
Am I the only one who thinks it’s insane that we allow two stroke engine leaf blowers to operate in residential areas? Why do so many otherwise sensible people not recognize the extreme externality of that noise? On some of the most beautiful days of the year it’s practically impossible to be outside without exposure to 75-80db of droning noise.

A dream photograph for me today!
A beewolf in flight predating a honeybee and just about to drop into its nest hole (bottom left)
In the nest the paralysed bee will be sealed into a chamber with an egg. Well I’m guessing you have seen “Alien”…

A few more shots of the amazing colony of beewolfs I saw yesterday
Wish I’d know about these earlier in the year as this is right at the end of the season for these but will defo head back there as soon as there’s another warmish day

Are plant–pollinator interactions more specialised in the tropics? After ~25 years of thinking about this question, our new global analysis suggests there’s no simple latitudinal rule: it all depends! Read about it here: jeffollerton.co.uk/2026/10/0…

I found this poor ole cold, wet male carpenter bee in the shade, so I warmed him up on my warm finger in the sun, and he was soon buzzing around our flowers again. #bees #pollinators #insects #Illinois #nature #macro #photography

You little Bee-auty
These little bees make honey bees look massive and bumblebees giants lol 😜
I’m changing systems so watch this space as I think I’m going to be doing next level stuff soon.

Somehow I had never seen a bumblebee pollinate a passionflower before! 🐝
Look how much pollen collects on her back as she drinks the nectar: the gap in the flower that she’s moving through looks perfectly tailored to the body of a large bee.
You can imagine that a smaller thing like a honeybee might visit to drink the nectar without actually catching any pollen and therefore would not be an effective pollinator of this plant.

Great excitement among the swarming male Ivy Bees at that last site at RSPB Fore Wood as the first females start to emerge - multiple competitive males form 'mating balls' around the female

After finding my first garden Beewolf (Philanthus triangulum), a male, on this Astrantia plant; the next time I went out this female Beewolf was also on there. This a an impressive wasp that provisions its nest with captured honeybees. Also three Ivy Bees on there too. Special!

There’s a slanderous rumor that carpenter bees are always nectar robbing, but that’s not true. They’re perfectly willing to try doing it the old fashioned way if the flower is big enough, like this Hollyhock. [Alameda, CA 8-16-26] #bees #nativebees

Thank you for 50k followers! 😊
Here’s a bee I photographed yesterday: the Common Furrow Bee (Lasioglossum calceatum).
This bee is only around 5mm long and is very common in the UK although few people seem to notice them.
The proposal would repeal the Roadless Rule, opening up nearly 45 million acres of national land to roadbuilding and logging, despite widespread opposition from scientists and the public. bit.ly/4g9eACO

Idiotic misinformation from the @BBC
Replying to @BBC
@BBC @CountryfileMag why are you demonising native wildflowers ragwort and spear thistle? Dangerously misleading information. Not illegal to grow in gardens. Vital resource for declining pollinators. No wonder people refuse to pay the license fee when you publish such DRIVEL.

How many people know what a baby bee looks like? 🐝
They don’t look like smaller versions of the adults, but like tiny, featureless larvae.
This is the larva of a Red Mason Bee in its chamber along with a store of ‘bee bread’ that its mother left for it.

Good news was not on my bingo card for this week, but I'll take it!
California just pressured paraquat makers to cancel ALL paraquat products in the state
CA was the largest paraquat user in the US - The dominoes are starting to fall
Well done!
