On this day in 1825, industrialist Robert Owen purchased the town of Harmony, Ind., from Father George Rapp and the Harmony Society. The social reformer renamed it New Harmony and worked to create a utopian society based on the ideals of humanism, equality, and scientific study—all revolutionary ideas for that time and place. The town quickly, though briefly, became internationally known as a center for advances in education and scientific research.
