Black History Month might be coming to a close, but that doesn't mean we should stop celebrating Black history and the efforts of Black organizers. POCKET would like to highlight one such figure - Velma Hopkins. Follow us to hear from BIPOC union baristas year-round!

Photos including Velma Hopkins and her biography as an organizer of Local 22 (FTA) a racially integrated local. This local was formed after a workers death on the job and subsequent walk out of over 10K people. Sadly due to heavy anti-union efforts and the Red Scare, Local 22 was decertified in 1950. However Velma never stopped organizing and became a part of the Civil Rights Movement , where she pushed for desegregation. Her fight for fair treatment is constant.

Today and everyday we celebrate Black History. We wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for those that paved the way for us.

Juneteenth, an annual celebration marking the end of slavery in the United States after the Civil War, has been joyfully observed by African Americans since the late 1800s. Members of SBWU's POCKET committee are delighted to honor such an important and historic day.

Have you ever wondered why we celebrate Cinco De Mayo? It's a holiday that's celebrated in many parts of the world, but not many people know the real reason behind it. We’d love to hear your thoughts on this festive occasion. #CincoDeMayo2024 #latino #tobeapartner

Replying to @Un1onBarbie
@Un1onBarbie met Margret Cook, an icon from the south, a leader in @CWAUnion. Witnessing the leadership of Black individuals is always a powerful experience. #LaborNotes2024 #blackgirls #unionpower #sbwu
