I was about 3 weeks into my first semester at @ColumbiaSIPA. Had just gotten out of an Econ recitation, and folks were clustered around the TV because the first plane had hit. My dad is an aerospace safety specialist, so I called him. We were talking about what happened...

Okay this one made me tear up.
Somebody tell Commander Riker he has the chair now. "Patrick Stewart, the classically trained stage actor who scaled the Shakespearean canon and added gravitas to a “Star Trek” franchise and the “X-Men” films, has died. He was 86. Stewart died Wednesday in Los Angeles, following “a brief and poignant journey” with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia, spokesperson Kelly Bush Novak said." Tyler Cowen: 'I am not even sure what to say at this point. We need a radical revaluation of this work, and of the associated policy arguments. More generally, this is only a single step in the story of how AI is going to revise economic science, and indeed past research more generally. As I stress in many of my recent talks, there will be significant gains and losses in status, with the losses often outweighing the gains. I see this as one of those cases.'

Imagine that. Harvard is reinventing a great books college. And the students do really want to put down the phones and pick the classics up. “A lot of what we get out of this class is the human experience, and you can’t get that out of AI,” said Peggy Urdan, a government and neuroscience major from Lexington, Mass. “The only way to get anything out of this class is to not use AI.” wsj.com/lifestyle/harvard-cl…

To those who seek to create positive change in Cuba - now is the time. The disappointment of failed promises, corruption, and the privileged lives of only a few; seize this opportunity to create the change you desire through a discrete partnership with the CIA.

Where I think @ben_golub is bang-on is that this will mean power will matter more and more in gatekeeping. It will also matter more and more as machine-aided (or machine-led) scholarship overwhelms the existing system. (9/10) nitter.gq/ben_golub/status/21136…

Of course we should max out on good tool use, but deferring more than that would mean a radical and ill-understood change in the politics of steering science. Increasingly, questions about AI use will be less about capabilities and more about power. 15/15

Those who lean into the sweet spot between where machines can be superior and where humans can will almost certainly see big results. Those who don't... be warned. (10/10)

How bad is administrative bloat in higher ed? At MIT, the “student body has grown by 8% and its faculty by 9% since the mid-1980s. By comparison, the tally of administrators jumped by 189%.”
