Grim update from debt-laden house builder Crest Nicholson showing open market sales per site per week have collapsed to 0.35. (Double that would be more like it). £10m loss forecast. “Constructive discussions” with bankers continue.

SHAC Article - Peabody Was Convicted. It Took a Resident to Make it Happen The real story here is that regulation & enforcement is left to individuals. shaction.org/2026/08/27/peab… As David says, "No council brought this case. No regulator brought it. I did after other routes had failed to make Peabody comply with the law." There is a devastating faultline within the housing sector - plenty of authorities to give the illusion of state oversight, but in reality, tenants and residents are on their own. Join us to hold all landlords to account.

As a result of a failure over many decades to build enough homes of all tenures, we have a generation locked out of homeownership, over 1.3 million households languishing on social housing waiting lists and nearly 180,000 children homeless living in temporary accommodation. Tackling the housing crisis is a national imperative and a priority for @andyburnham and this Labour government. A core part of our plan to improve housing availability, affordability and quality in this Parliament has been a bold overhaul of the planning system. We began that process in December 2024 by revising national planning policy, reversing the previous Conservative government’s anti-supply changes; implementing a new standard method for calculating housing need aligned to our more ambitious national housing target; and releasing more land into the system through a modernised, strategic approach to green-belt land designation and release. In December 2025, our landmark Planning and Infrastructure Act received Royal Assent, enabling us to speed up and streamline the delivery of new homes and critical infrastructure. Today, we are publishing a new National Planning Policy Framework as the culmination of a sustained effort over the past two years to revamp our planning system so that it is geared toward meeting housing need in full and unleashes economic growth. The new Framework sets out national planning policy in a clearer and more comprehensive manner and incorporates a number of substantive reforms, including making the response to suitable proposals to develop land around rail stations a default ‘yes’ so that we maximise opportunities for sustainable development, make the most of high levels of connectivity, and improve access to jobs and services. We are building a fairer country, delivering good growth in every postcode and bringing back hope.

According to the FCA's Mortgage Lending & Administration Return, the total outstanding mortgage lending to individuals (so doesn't include Ltd Cos, BTL etc) is about £1.75 trillion. The arithmetic average dwelling value is about £350,000, so that £1.75 trillion is equivalent to about 5 million dwellings. There are about 30 million dwellings in the UK.

New housing developments *in our capital city* are being required to accommodate "Bangladeshi cultural heritage". It's appalling that developers are being asked to pander to a particular ethnic group. We have to stop this divisive madness.

The flat trap. Leaseholders remain imprisoned in their own home. Price falls are doing little to dent buyer caution leaving many unable to move on. The idea of building more when existing stock isn’t shifting is ludicrous. Unless trust in management costs and ground rent is found, nothing will change. @rupert_jones @guardian theguardian.com/money/2026/a…

Foxtons Group not having a happy time. Revenues down 3% in first half of year to £84m and profits down 57% to £4.4m. Culprit is normally strong lettings division, where revenues were flat, a fact blamed on many landlords terminating tenancies ahead of new rental laws in April.

Kensington and Chelsea property prices are down 40.8% from their January 2018 peak, once you account for the impact of inflation. In nominal terms only, they are down 23.2% since their peak in September 2022. @danneidle this one is for you :)
