it's hard to overstate the impact of someone like Tetsuya Chiba while trying to not undermine their actual body of work, for as much as Chiba served as the influence for generations of mangaka, his work was also deeply poetic and filled with a love for life and craft

Ashita no Joe artist Tetsuya Chiba has passed away at 87 years old. He is known for his sports series aside from Joe, such as Notari Matsutaro. At the time of his passing, he was illustrating "Hinemotsu notari nikki" in Shogakukan's Big Comic. We send our deepest condolences to his family and celebrate the legacy he's left on manga as an art form.

Even all these years later, Chiba's characters are incredibly human. Joe will always be memorable for the fact that he was not a demigod, but a regular street urchin who fought against all odds, surrounded by other flawed humans. A truly wonderful author has been gone to rest.

its hard not to have negative feelings towards a work that essentially "yadda yadda"'s a core skill to the sport its covering so it can get to the "good stuff" quicker. like it makes it feel very soulless (which this has in spades, already)
