Everyone is always rooting for you. Your parents want you to be a great son. Wife wants you to be a great husband. Your boss wants you to be a slam dunk hire. Every first date you’ve ever been on they’ve been rooting for you to get laid. Every time you started to tell a joke people hoped it would have a hilarious punch line. Your proximity to anyone is a reflection of themself, meaning the deck is never stacked against you, and your failures are completely your own

A girl just said she tried to get rejected 1000 times in 2025 and ended up being cast in plays, winning pageants, securing hella paid brand deals, and appearing in commercials. This is your sign to chase rejection to the point of "accidental" success. You'll be surprised.

Nathan Fielder: “What’s the player’s name?” Elizabeth Holmes: “I don’t know.” My wife, involuntarily: “No, he’s on third!”
I was admittedly having audible reactions to You Can See Everything, so much so that I got a dirty look from the guy in the row ahead of me but like idk how u can see some of that shit and not have an audible reaction

New newsletter: THE AI SAFETY MOMENT IS HERE—NOW WHAT? It's not just viral Twitter post from ex-Anthropic employees. Many, many, many executives and leaders at the frontier labs—far more than most people would think—say both on and off the record that they believe they're on the verge of building a form of AI that is too powerful to control. In today's article, I explain WTF they're talking about; the strongest version of their argument; the smartest reasons to not believe it; and what I think we can do. This is my best stab at what I consider the ~4 biggest questions of the moment 1. If the labs think they're building something dangerous, why don't they just stop? 2. Why should we believe them? 3. Many of of these "we shouldn't build RSI/we must build RSI!" ppl claim to be stuck in a prisoner's dilemma with China, which allegedly has its sights on designing super-powerful AGI that can improve itself to dominate the world. Are we sure about the CCP's AI strategy? Are we sure that we're sure? If we're building a dangerous machine-intelligence civilization that could screw over the species, I think we'd better be *extremely fucking sure* that we are reacting to a Chinese strategy that actually exists rather than a strategy that we're imagining and reacting to. 3. What is "recursive self-improvement," or RSI—which is often the red line of danger they foresee—and what is the best evidence it's possible to build and imminent? 4. How hard is it to imagine policies and tools that could exist in a world with pro-AI Republicans controlling a branch of government that ALSO meaningfully helps the labs control their inventions? derekthompson.org/p/its-time…

Two extraordinary charts from today’s PISA test results: 1) School test scores continue to collapse internationally, underscoring how this is no longer a Covid effect but sustained decline. Those falls in reading and maths are equivalent to about two years of lost schooling.

Incredible. They did a whole paper about meetings and it sounds really important. Seems understudied by economists
From David and friends in NBER: meetings good for you? Your starting point should be "most people are bad at their jobs when they start, they learn from colleagues, and things that reduce the rate of that learning is bad in the long run". WFH/remote should have *more* meetings.

Stop listening to loser podcasters who want you to be depressed and angry and think "America is over." Get in the game, build something, contribute to your community. In many ways, it's never been a better time to be optimistic and high agency

Amazing. A parish in Louisiana tied teacher bonuses to local sales taxes, so when Meta built a data center in the area, the teacher bonuses skyrocketed so much that they more than doubled their paychecks:

Really cool at the top of the WSJ homepage today: "An experimental mRNA-based vaccine succeeded in preventing cancer from coming back or spreading in a study of high-risk melanoma patients, Moderna and its partner Merck said Wednesday" Last year, an mRNA cancer vaccine was also shown to stop the recurrence of pancreatic cancer after surgery. It feels like we're just starting to pry open the heavy door of a new field: personalized mRNA cancer therapies that teach the body to fight cancers after initial treatment

Ro, I like you. You know that. But you need to read the state of the state. The number of Deca Unicorns in Cali is growing by the day as investors chase amazing startups. A unique feature of these 10b startups is that even if they raise a billion, little, if any of that money goes to the founders, who are now worth billions of dollars over night. They are the definition of cash poor, stock rich How are you going to tax them ? Make them borrow money against their shares, if they can? They just raised money to grow their company and a bank will come along and loan them money ? A company that has been in business maybe less than a year ? lol Will you take their stock if they can’t ? Do you really think each of multiple founders, who started an amazing company in Cali and is now a billionaire, can each just pull out $250m per billion of net worth from their raise ? You know they can’t. If this passes , and it doesn’t directly impact me at all, I won’t be a cali resident, but you can bet if I’m investing in a multi billion dollar startup, I’m asking them to move from California first. IMO, if this passes, only idiot startup founders stay in Cali. I’ve done it before and will do it again. Dallas. Pittsburgh. Indiana. I will make NOT being in California a pre requisite for an investment Ideology is not a strategy Ro.
The California Democratic Party and the California labor movement just stood with @BernieSanders and me in supporting 5% wealth tax on 250 California billionaires. California voters want a Democratic Party that will stand up for the working class over the billionaire class.
