In 1955, local violinist Olive Short became the first female Concertmaster in a North American orchestra when she accepted the position with the HPO. Short, the mother of actor and comedian Martin Short, also served as an ‘Officer’ with the HPO’s early administrative leadership.

Orchestras don’t die this way. This is new. If a 21 year old collapsed and abruptly died in in your living room, and 911 wasn’t even called, you’d want to know how and why this happened. There is more here than a cautionary tale about pre and post-Covid operations. #kwsymphony

I have been enjoying the new @AppleClassical Music App. It's nice that the metadata lists the artists, conductors, and composers--and access to linear notes.

In 1861, Franz Liszt attended a party where a 22 year-old virtuoso known for his sight-reading was dared to read one of the composer's most difficult works. After he did, Liszt said "Perhaps three players in the world can do such a thing."
That 22 year-old was Georges Bizet.
