🚨 MAGNITUDE 5.7 EARTHQUAKE HITS CENTRAL JAPAN 🚨 A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck western Shizuoka Prefecture at about 1:04 a.m. Sunday, Japan time, 11:04 a.m. Saturday ET, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The agency put the depth at about 40 kilometers. The strongest shaking registered intensity upper 5 on Japan’s 0-to-7 scale in Chita City, Aichi Prefecture. Intensity lower 5 was recorded in Hamamatsu’s Hamana Ward and in other cities in Aichi, Gifu, and Nagano. JMA issued an earthquake early warning and said there was no threat of a tsunami. 🚨 EL-SAYED SAYS MICHIGAN IS THE CAPITAL OF ARAB AMERICA 🚨 Days after winning Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat, Democratic senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed told an Arab American summit that “Michigan is the capital of Arab America.” The remarks came Friday at the CONNECT Arab America: Empowerment Summit in Chantilly, Virginia, near Washington. The event was hosted by the Arab America Foundation. According to transcripts of the remarks published by New Media Detroit and The Daily Wire, he said, “I’m honored to be the next United States Senator from the great state of Michigan.” He then said, “I know we’re here in DC, which of course is the capital of the United States of America, but Michigan is the capital of Arab America.” El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers on November 3. He is not yet sworn in. He is set to take the seat being vacated by retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters in January 2027. “Capital of Arab America” has long been used as a nickname for Dearborn, which has a large, longstanding Arab American community. 🚨 PROTESTERS BREAK INTO MICROSOFT DATA CENTER SITE IN AMSTERDAM 🚨 Protesters from the Dutch group Geef Tegengas broke into a data center construction site in Amsterdam’s Sloterdijk / Westpoort area on Friday, climbing a crane, setting off flares, and hanging banners. Dutch police said an estimated 150 to 200 suspects were detained for trespassing. Police said one officer was slightly injured. They did not say how the injury happened. The site is being built by the British developer Pure Data Centres. Microsoft is the intended tenant, not the owner of the land or the building. A banner on the crane and scaffolding read “down with datacentre, fuck AI.” Another, reported by NOS, read “Microsoft is genocide.” Roos Molenaar of Geef Tegengas told The Guardian, “We won’t accept Amsterdam being used for the creation of AI slop and the facilitation of genocide.” She also said, “This datacenter is gulping up our drinking water to make the rich even richer.” Microsoft said: “We understand that people feel strongly about the project, and we respect their right to express those views peacefully. 🚨 TRUMP NAMES STEPHEN MILLER WHITE HOUSE CHIEF OF STAFF 🚨 President Trump announced Friday that Stephen Miller, his deputy chief of staff, will become White House chief of staff starting Monday, November 9, 2026, replacing Susie Wiles. “I am pleased to announce that Mr. Stephen Miller, the current Deputy Chief of Staff of the Trump Administration, and one of my most trusted advisors, will become the Chief of Staff starting Monday, November 9, 2026,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Susie Wiles, who has done an outstanding job, will be moving over to the Trump Political Operation,” he said. “I want to thank her for her service as Chief of Staff. She has done a great job!” Miller’s formal title has been deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security advisor. Wiles has served as chief of staff since January 20, 2025, and was the first woman in the role. Trump did not give a reason for the change. 🚨 KENYAN CULT LEADER SENTENCED TO 200 YEARS FOR KILLING 191 PEOPLE 🚨 Paul Mackenzie, the leader of Good News International Church, was sentenced Friday to 200 years in prison by the High Court in Mombasa. The court convicted him of murdering 191 people in the Shakahola Forest in Kilifi County, 190 of them children and one of them an adult. According to the judgment reported by Daily Nation, 161 of the children were younger than 9 and a half, 22 were ages 10 to 13, 5 were ages 14 to 16 and a half, and the ages of 2 children were unknown. The court found that 183 people died of starvation, 182 of them children, and that 8 children were killed by suffocation, strangulation, or blunt force after they resisted. Mackenzie was convicted on Oct. 19, along with 28 co-accused, of ordering followers to starve so they could "meet Jesus." Judge Diana Kavedza-Mochache gave him 100 years on the starvation-murder counts and 100 years on the direct-homicide counts, with the two sets running consecutively. Prosecutors asked for the death penalty. The judge said the case met the legal threshold but declined. "For persons who regard death as deliverance, a death sentence may be perceived not as punishment, but as a triumph and a form of martyrdom," she said, according to Daily Nation. Kenya has not carried out an execution since 1987. "The sentences of this court must match the darkness of their deeds and the maximum penalty of the law," the judge said. The 28 accomplices received terms of up to 160 years. More than 400 bodies were recovered from the forest after Mackenzie's 2023 arrest. Kenya's national human rights commission has put the number at 448. The 191 deaths in this case were the ones before the court. Mackenzie has denied forcing anyone to starve. 🚨 DSA CO-CHAIR CALLS $49 TRILLION COST ESTIMATE A "MADE UP NUMBER" 🚨 DSA national co-chair Megan Romer appeared on Fox's "The Story" with Martha MacCallum on Wednesday. MacCallum cited a White House Council of Economic Advisers report putting the DSA agenda at about $49 trillion over 10 years, or about $350,000 per household, as she said on air. The report itself says approximately $355,000 per household. "How are you going to pay for that?" MacCallum asked, listing student-debt cancellation, "open borders and amnesty," and Medicare for All. Romer said: "Yeah, I mean, we understand that the White House, who does not like us very much, managed to come up with some math that made us look bad. But we don't agree with these numbers." MacCallum said Medicare for All alone was $47.4 trillion. "Yeah, it's a made up number," Romer said. Asked for her own total, Romer said: "There's no like, one solid number because it depends on what pieces we can build in the meantime." 🚨 SYSTEM FAILURE TAKES 128 WESTERN JAPAN BANKS OFFLINE 🚨 A shared computer system used by Japan's shinkin banks, which are cooperative credit unions, failed Friday afternoon in Japan. 128 of the 236 shinkin banks on that system went offline at once, from the Tokai region west through Kyushu. ATMs, internet banking, transfers to other banks, and teller counters at 3,430 branches stopped working. Deposits stayed in the accounts. Customers could not take the money out. The Shinkin Kyodo Center said the outage began at 1:35 p.m. Japan time, about 11:35 p.m. Eastern time Thursday, and was caused by equipment failure, not a cyberattack. Asahi reported a fault in a storage device at the West Japan Center. Yomiuri said it may be tied to a mid-October system update. Service was fully restored at about 7:05 p.m. Japan time Friday, about 5:05 a.m. Eastern time, after about five and a half hours. All 8 shinkin banks in Fukuoka prefecture were affected, as were 27 in the Kansai region and Tokushima. Paper signs went up on ATMs in Osaka. "A minimum term of 21 years did not adequately reflect the overall seriousness of the murder. It was not only lenient, but unduly so," said Lady Chief Justice Baroness Carr. Digwa stabbed Nowak, a Southampton University student, with a large kirpan during a chance encounter in Southampton on Dec. 3, 2025. Attorney General Ellie Reeves referred the case.
