Rice farmers in the coastal region are appealing to the government for enhancements to water storage infrastructure to support the growth of rice cultivation.
The farmers said that sufficient water has demonstrated encouraging outcomes in specific areas of the coastal region.
"This variety of rice does not demand a large amount of water for growth, but it requires consistent soil moisture, which is another reason we need to irrigate frequently to maintain soil moisture," Immaculate Wanjiku, a rice farmer from Voi, explained.
Eng. Jairus Serede, the Director of Irrigation Management Services at the National Irrigation Authority (NIA), announced that the authority aims to improve the country's water storage infrastructure to mitigate the effects of El Niño rains and ensure food security.
