FACT-CHECK: TINUBU DID NOT RECRUIT SEGUN SHOWUNMI’S WIFE INTO INEC — HER CAREER STARTED WITH NEC IN 2000 AND PREDATES HIS PRESIDENCY By Ishola Adebiyi | THE TROJAN BEAST An old career record challenges a viral allegation linking President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the employment of Oluyemi Titilayo Adeyemi-Showunmi, wife of political figure Segun Showunmi. A social media commentator identified as Trigottista has alleged that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu newly appointed Mrs Oluyemi Titilayo Adeyemi-Showunmi as Director of Electoral Operations at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The commentator went further, suggesting that her husband, Segun Showunmi, had received political favours in exchange for supporting Tinubu. But what does the documented record actually show? THE EVIDENCE GOES BACK TO 2021 — AND MUCH EARLIER On March 28, 2021, more than two years before Tinubu assumed the presidency, the Nigerian Tribune published an extensive interview titled: “My life about impact, not amassing resources — Adeyemi-Showunmi.” The publication explicitly identified Mrs Adeyemi-Showunmi as a Deputy Director with INEC's Lagos State Office. In that interview, she explained that her association with Nigeria's electoral administration began during her National Youth Service in Maiduguri, Borno State. She subsequently secured employment with the former National Electoral Commission (NEC) as an Administrative Officer II. She described her progression through the ranks to Deputy Director in Field Services and Administration. Let the dates sink in. By March 2021, she had already reached the rank of Deputy Director. Tinubu did not become President until May 29, 2023. It is therefore inaccurate to present her as somebody newly recruited into INEC by the Tinubu administration. THE 2026 REDEPLOYMENT IS A SEPARATE ISSUE Reports published in October 2026 indicate that Mrs Adeyemi-Showunmi was redeployed from her position as Administrative Secretary of INEC's Lagos office to head the Electoral Operations Department. Those reports also describe the movement of the previous departmental director, Isah Magaji Gummi, to the Voter Registry Department. That development raises a legitimate question about the reasons for the redeployment and how it was approved. But there is a fundamental difference between recruiting somebody into an organisation and reassigning an existing career employee to another responsibility. One does not automatically establish the other. WHAT DOES THE CONSTITUTION SAY? Section 158(1) of Nigeria's 1999 Constitution protects INEC's independence in exercising its appointment and disciplinary powers. The President's constitutional role in appointing INEC commissioners must not be confused with the commission's internal personnel administration. Anyone alleging that Tinubu personally directed Mrs Adeyemi-Showunmi's redeployment should provide evidence of that intervention. DOES HER HUSBAND'S POLITICAL ACTIVITY PROVE ELECTORAL COMPROMISE? No such conclusion follows automatically. Segun Showunmi's political involvement may legitimately prompt questions about safeguards against conflicts of interest, particularly because Electoral Operations is a sensitive department. But marriage to a political figure is not, by itself, evidence of misconduct, compromised electoral procedures or a secret political bargain. Claims that Showunmi has “collected rice” require evidence rather than insinuation. INEC should be able to explain its redeployment process and the measures protecting staff independence. THE TROJAN BEAST CONCLUSION The documented history contradicts any suggestion that Mrs Adeyemi-Showunmi only entered INEC because of President Tinubu. She was already a Deputy Director in 2021 and describes a career beginning under the former NEC. Her reported 2026 redeployment is a separate, more recent personnel decision that warrants proper documentation. VERDICT: MISLEADING CLAIM. The allegation conflates longstanding employment with a recent departmental redeployment. No verified evidence presented establishes that Tinubu personally made the redeployment or that a political bargain occurred. To Trigottista: A photograph, a marriage certificate and a political accusation are not substitutes for an appointment record. If you allege presidential interference, produce evidence of presidential interference.
