Not enough people are talking about the emotional ‘thrill’ that people in the ‘Pro-Palestine’marches and protests are getting each time they join (and plan), and how it may be a large driver of the participant’s action. Durkheim called it ‘collective effervescence‘. #sociology

Let’s talk about anti-Zionism and Zionism seriously then, Zack I was born in the USSR six years before it collapsed, in the Jewish Autonomous Region in the Far East – the place Stalin set up as his “alternative” to Zionism. My grandparents were sent there from Ukraine in the late 1940s. They had already survived the Holodomor and the Purge. They had already survived the Holocaust, while their parents and many of their relatives did not. Then Stalin’s anti-Zionist campaigns against “rootless cosmopolitans” finished the job of scattering what was left of their world. As a kid in Khabarovsk I had to hide that I was Jewish. Being Jewish was for some “curious” reason “problematic” among my peers. After the Soviet collapse we lived through our own mini-famine in the Far East in 1992, then the wild 1990s (something closer to 1930s Chicago than any Western European imagines when they picture the post-Soviet years) What actually saved us and hundreds of thousands of other Jews? A few things of course. But one of them (and perhaps the most important one) was Zionism: concrete help from Jewish organizations, and the simple idea that Jews had a right to self-determination somewhere we wouldn’t have to hide or beg for our survival. For my family, Zionism wasn’t an abstract ideology or self identity, it was a program that saved us. It was the difference between getting out and staying trapped in the same cycle of state-sponsored anti-Jewish policy that had already killed so many of our relatives. And what your fancy anti-Zionist Jews and non-Jews in the West were doing back then, when vast majority of Soviet Jews desperately needed any help? Ah, yes, how could I forget it. They sided with the oppressing Soviet regime, of course So when a champagne socialist, who was born in the first world country and personally saw the oppression of Jews only through the pictures in a couple of historical books, tells me the entire national self-determination project was illegitimate and that I (and people like me) were somehow wrong to survive because of it, I would prefer a direct answer. Not fancy and sassy slogans he drops. Just tell me, Zack, why I and my family deserved to die or remain permanently vulnerable instead of using the one mechanism that worked when every other one failed? I’m genuinely curious

This is such an interesting response to my explanation for Israeli legal tricks to avoid the religious designation of mamzerut that it's worth answering. Not because the complaint matters. And yes, it's vaguely "anti-Jewish medieval polemic" style. But because the answer is interesting. In Judaism, you see, the great God-given law, once actually given, is from that moment a human-shaped law. It's a core principle of the tradition. Because if the law keeps needing to refer back to God for rulings, that's revelation. And if revelation continues, then the Torah isn't the thing itself, merely the opening shot. Even prophecy, the dimmest, thinnest shadow of the thing, has stopped, the tradition affirms. Thus Deuteronomy teaches: "Surely, this commandment that I enjoin upon you this day is not too baffling for you, nor is it beyond reach. It is not in the heavens, that you should say, 'Who among us can go up to the heavens and get it for us and impart it to us, that we may observe it?' Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, 'Who among us can cross to the other side of the sea and get it for us and impart it to us, that we may observe it?' No, the thing is very close to you, in your mouth and in your heart, to observe it." No written law can encompass lived experience. So law speaks in categories, not just details. The application and adaptation are for humans. And more fundamentally, we're supposed to bend the law toward mercy. That's a core precept of the whole system. It's in Ramban's interpretation of the very chapter of Deuteronomy quoted above. God is infinite truth. But as God teaches in the Torah itself, infinite truth isn't always enough. In the here and now, in the narrow confines of our limited human experience, we need mercy too. That's why the Torah, while it commands that we obey the laws, includes among those laws, "be holy," "love your fellow like yourself," and other instructions that boil down to being merciful and good, not just sticklers for the law. It's also in the examples of our fathers. Abraham argues with God to spare Sodom, and he doesn't mince words: “Shall not the Judge of all the earth do justice?” That's a hell of a thing to throw at God. Justice isn't just what wicked people deserve, justice is also generosity and mercy beyond what is deserved. There are many other examples of arguing with God -- Jacob wrestling the angel, Moses routinely protesting the divine will. These are usually held up as examples of goodness. In one famous debate about an oven in the Talmud (Bava Metzia 59b), one rabbi manages to summon a divine voice to affirm he's right. The opposing rabbi decrees, "it isn't in the heavens," and the rabbis rule by the that opposing rabbi. And God, the story tells, laughs in pride and says, "my children have defeated me." The proud father who sees his children, obedient to the law and joyful in its service but nevertheless carving out their own path, knows He taught them well. That's what Israeli courts do about mamzerut, and it's a practice enshrined in long-standing Jewish law. We are to carve our own path through the law, erring on the side of mercy. That's the tradition. (If you want more, if you want to see the Talmud literally mock these issues, point out that nobody cares about a mamzer's status if they have money or if their family has power, and then conclude that God irons out the imperfections in the end, go to Kiddushin 71.) And it's worth mentioning: Christianity took this thread in Jewish religious culture and built a vast and beautiful religious universe out of it. This is the part of our tradition that Christians should have the least trouble understanding. When Jesus says, "I desire mercy, not sacrifice," he's quoting the prophet Hosea. In Christianity, this became the warp and woof of redemption itself.

Imagine trying to trick God by not testing for parentage. As if your obfuscation will shield you from your religious law. This only makes sense if the religion is untethered from God all together.

I'm looking for an artist in Japan to illustrate my short stories. I write speculative fiction: scifi, magical realism, horror, and fantasy. Color or black and white drawings are ok. There's a link to my stories in my bio. Please message me with your rates and info.

I don’t think people realize just how many left-wing/progressive Jews were *completely* abandoned in recent years. We’ve been told we should support causes for everyone except ourselves.

My article documenting the systematic distortion of the historical record on Wikipedia, with a particular focus on the work of one of the most prominent historians of the Arab-Israeli conflict, Prof. Benny Morris, has now been published by Quillette. Grateful for the opportunity to share my research, and special thanks to Prof. Morris, who graciously agreed to review an earlier draft of the manuscript and confirm that my analysis of the way his work is misrepresented on Wikipedia was accurate.
How Wikipedia Rewrote Zionism Since October 2023, four-fifths of the encyclopedia’s article on Zionism has been replaced. And work of editors who have been banned from the page remains. quillette.com/2026/10/30/how…

SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield

The people who supposedly have a Jewish identity unlinked to Israel sure spend a lot of time talking about Israel.

"This is the scene at the Jewish girls school, students dancing to Persian pop songs during lunch break." "Wearing the hijab is mandatory for all Iranian girls in school from the age of seven" The latest CNN propaganda for the regime in Iran is on the Jewish community. I think the worst part was when they cheerfully talked about young Jewish girls being forced to wear hijab, as though this isn't an example of cultural erasure and gender oppression.

The same misinformation now shows on Letterboxd, which uses The Movie Database API.
Someone has changed the description of this film on The Movie Database. That data is used by other services (such as Infuse). The changes are, naturally, historically inaccurate. #Antizionism
