35: Dalton weaves a fantastical story that gives us the marvellous voice of 12 yo Eli Bell & his voiceless brother August. In part a fictionalised autobiography, in part a love letter to Brisbane, it manages to be laugh out loud funny, gritty, and heartbreaking in equal measure.
32: 4 siblings, abandoned by their parents grow up in chaotic Lagos. Alternating chapters describe the twin sisters as they set off on very divergent paths, drifting away from their younger brothers. Poetically exploring themes of abandonment, abuse, struggle & poverty.
31: I finished this yesterday. An inspiring memoir told through food. Wry, warm, full to the brim with deliciousness. On completion I headed straight to the supermarket & the butcher & spent the entire afternoon cooking. Then we watched Big Night. Pure, unadulterated joy.
30: The story of Karuna, pregnant at 16, whose mother has confined her to their 14th floor Melbourne council flat. Claustrophobic, dark & funny in equal measure it explores the complexities of mother/daughter relationships & tensions between love & control, culture & superstition
