He rushed in when everyone else ran away. On July 12, while a young girl from Odisha’s FM College set herself on fire in front of the Principal’s office, alleging harassment by a senior faculty member, panic spread across the campus. Most fled. But 3rd-year student Jyoti Prakash Biswal ran towards the flames. With no thought for his own safety, he tried to douse the fire with his shirt, suffering severe burns to his hands, face, and chest in the process. The girl, who suffered 90–95% burns, tragically passed away. Jyoti now fights for his life in SCB Medical College, Cuttack, with 15 parts of his body affected, and doctors working around the clock. Despite his extraordinary courage, Jyoti's family says they’ve received no financial help from the state or college. "He acted selflessly. We’re proud—but feel abandoned," his father shared. Doctors remain hopeful. Jyoti is stable, responsive, and could recover in 7–10 days. Odisha’s Health Minister has assured support, but the family still awaits concrete action.
