I wasn’t prepared for my name being read out by Amitabh Bachchan on KBC. Happened last Friday. Hopefully, ‘The Great Smog of India’ moves from being relevant every winter to being a forgotten historical account in the coming years.

Why do South Asians get type 2 diabetes at much lower body weights? The answer is in their fat cells. These are fat cells from two young men with the same BMI. The South Asian man's are on the left. The white man's are on the right. At the same BMI as white Europeans, South Asians carry more body fat, bigger fat cells, more liver fat, and higher insulin. Here is what the studies show. 1. Same BMI, much bigger fat cells. In 29 South Asian and 18 white men, average age 27, BMI was 24 vs 23. Body fat was 22% vs 15%. The average belly fat cell was 3,491 vs 1,648 µm² in cross section. Treating the cells as spheres, that is about 3 times the volume of fat per cell on average. The samples in the image show an even larger difference. The larger the fat cells, the worse the insulin resistance. Visceral fat was the same in both groups. 2. Matched for age and BMI, still more insulin. Asian Indians matched to white adults had similar fasting glucose but higher fasting insulin, and they cleared glucose about 40% less well on a clamp test (4.7 vs 7.5 mg/kg/min). 3. Fat cell size explains much of the insulin gap. After adjusting for age, sex and BMI, South Asians had larger fat cells, liver fat of 9.9% vs 2.5%, and higher fasting insulin. Adjusting for fat cell size cut the insulin difference in half. 4. Lean and young. Among 482 lean young adults, insulin resistance was 2 to 3 times more common in Asian Indians than in any other group. The men had about twice the liver fat of white men. 5. It starts in childhood. South Asian children aged 8 to 11 in Britain were not heavier than white children, but their fasting insulin was 53% higher, with similar blood glucose. My view: fat cells can only store so much. When they are full, they become insulin resistant and release more fat into the blood, and that fat ends up in the liver and muscle. Insulin rises to compensate. South Asians appear to reach that limit at a lower body weight. For a South Asian person, a normal BMI does not mean normal metabolism. Fasting insulin, waist size and liver fat say more than weight.

Hiding a fire extinguisher is a hilariously bad idea. And someone thinking it’s a great design perfectly encapsulates the mindset of most Apple cultists when it comes to anything Apple does

It’s so funny there’s so many industries that would benefit from better walking infrastructure. All of this would also drastically improve health standards
The whole grocery home delivery industry exists because of the lack of footpaths. Indian cities don't have usable footpaths because there's no constituency that will fight for it. Perhaps retail outlets should form an industry body that fights solely for walkable footpaths.

It’s so annoying how we apparently need to take societal direction and cues from people who don’t go out and do anything normal, so they’re all like “what if you could do this thing that’s already possible… but now we’re middlemen and you paid us $40 billion dollars for that…?”
Instinct CEO Noah Shinn says agents will let restaurants give tables to birthdays and anniversaries over whoever clicks first "And traditionally, because of the way that the internet has worked, at least for reservations, it's been first come first serve. So anyone that comes in, no matter how important or how not important it might be, whoever gets in first gets the reservation." "But what if you had the ability for the agent to be able to communicate on both sides, communicate, hey, this is important. This is actually the person's spouse's birthday, the 30th birthday, a very special event is coming up." "And the restaurant too can say, let's actually prioritize birthdays or major decade birthdays or major anniversaries or these certain people, I don't know, whatever it might be, right?" "So now with the ability, with all of the logistical burden of having to describe exactly what your case is and what's happening and why it's important. Now we have the ability to perfectly match what does the restaurant want? What does the user want?" "And that will result in more special events for the users being able to actually have a spot in the restaurant."

Some people want to listen to infinite personalised AI music. It's their choice. I want to listen to the same song on loop. I want to listen to other singers sing covers of it. Then go to the concert and watch the original artist sing it in person. I want to stop in my tracks when I hear the song playing out of a cafe while walking aimlessly in a new country. I want to meet others who like the same song and then talk about it. I want to sing it with strangers in a karaoke. I want to know the life story of the singer. I want to know their political views. I want to listen to the same song on loop.
I am not joking when I say this. Spotify, Apple Music, and streaming in general is over. AI music is now very, very good. You just don't know yet because all AI music circulating today is from ~2-3 generations ago. Suno v6 pro et al has solved infinite personalized music.

Researchers built an AI that doxes any "anonymous" reddit account in under a minutes for $2. eth zurich and anthropic published a terrifying paper proving that "practical anonymity" on the internet is officially dead. they built a fully autonomous ai pipeline that takes your pseudonymous posts, extracts your identity signals, searches the web, and figures out exactly who you are. no human investigator needed. the numbers are actually mindblowing.. - 67% of hacker news users identified correctly - when the system makes a guess, it is right 90% of the time - it even unmasked scientists whose interview transcripts were explicitly redacted for privacy the scariest part? even time doesn't protect you.. they tested users who took a full year break and changed their interests. the ai still matched their old and new profiles with 90% precision. it sees through your persona changes like they aren't even there. there is no defense against this. the agent splits the work into tiny, benign tasks like "summarizing a profile" or "ranking candidates." no api safety guardrail is going to flag it because no single step looks malicious.. every throwaway account. every "nobody will connect this to me" comment. it’s all just searchable micro-data now.
