Can the #brain be trained to speak without actually speaking? A new @CommsBio paper shows that users can improve brain-computer interface control through training, unlocking new possibilities for imagined #speech communication. Read it now at: go.nature.com/4bhAuj1 #BCI
📣 IMAGINED SPEECH-BCI PAPER OUT! 📣
We trained healthy volunteers to control a Brain-Computer Interface by imagining pronouncing one of two syllables over 5 consecutive days. We found :
🧠 People indeed learn to control the system
nature.com/articles/s42003-0…
📊 The performance improvement was linked to power increase over frontal and central regions in the theta band and the left temporal area in the low-gamma band.
📉 With training, decoding features become more focal and localized over most discriminant features.

Big day for the @TNE_LAB! We officially started our collaboration with industrial partner BionIT Labs (a rising star in the field of bionics with their @Adams_Hand_) to work on integrating thermal feedback in future prosthetic hands!
Huge thanks to the @EPFL Technology transfer office and the Enable grant for supporting us.
With @_smicera, @JonathanMuheim @Neuro_X_EPFL

ALT The loss of rich sensory inputs has a major impact on the quality of life of amputees, leading to debilitating levels of phantom limb pain and the abandonment of their prostheses. The TNE Lab recently developed a method to restore temperature sensations in upper-limb amputees. The participants could perceive objects at different temperatures, made of various materials, and recognize the warmth of someone’s hand. This project seeks to improve the current research prototype for home use.

Indeed a stellar team! 🤩
If you are attending SfN in Chicago this year, join our nano symposium on Oct 5th at 1 pm. We have a stellar lineup with @giacomo_valle @LabSomato @SRaspopovic @losborn1 @robert_gaunt1 @lauracrucianel1 @JonathanMuheim @natnatkatic and others I could not find on X :)

I feel at home in Switzerland, I love many aspects of the local culture and I even produced a little Swiss humain. But I'll never get used to the sadness of the single layer of ham and cheese in sandwiches. #swisspanini #notrubensandwich

Our research with the amazing Nova survivors, investigating how trauma experienced under psychedelics is processed has been covered in @nytimes nytimes.com/2024/04/11/world…
Honored to share our latest research, rooted deeply in my heart: investigating how traumatic events experienced under psychoactive substances are processed, with the brave survivors of the Supernova festival attack.

Great talk and great science from @meaperei on intracranial neural correlates of perceptual decisions and confidence👏🏼💥 #WIRED24 @institutcerveau – at Paris, France
📢Speech-BCI paper out📢 Decoding imagined speech is real-time is incredibly difficult, so in this study we worked to improve the decoding approach by developing an adaptive LDA classifier 👇 1/3

This is one piece of our comprehensive approach to develop a BCI to decode imagined speech.
Great work and congrats to Shizhe Wu, and collaborators 3/3 @Kinkini15 @giraud_lise from @labgiraud @NCCR_Language #BCI #braincomputerinterface #speechdecoding 🧠🗣️
Almost forgot to thank my muse @irene_balboni for the picture in the 1st post, tirelessly lending her #recchie to science and photography 💆♀️💜👂
