Today feels different.
As I reflect on the election results in the United States, I am hopeful about the possibilities ahead for a kinder, more just, inclusive, and compassionate world. Democracy is never perfect, and progress is never guaranteed, but moments like this remind us that people can choose hope over fear, solidarity over division, and evidence over misinformation.
Canada has been my home since 1989, but I spent six formative years in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where I studied, worked as a registered nurse, and deepened many of the values that continue to guide my professional and public life. Like many Canadians, I have followed U.S. public life closely for decades because what happens there often reverberates far beyond its borders.
What particularly encourages me is the engagement of younger generations and the emergence of bold, progressive leaders, and the millions alongside them, who are helping reshape the public conversation. Together, they are bringing equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, climate action, and social justice back into the mainstream, not as political slogans, but as essential principles for building stronger communities, healthier societies, and more responsive democracies.
The challenges before us remain significant: growing inequality, threats to democracy, climate change, attacks on human rights, rising intolerance, and the urgent need to strengthen public services, including health care. Yet this moment offers renewed confidence that these challenges can be met through collective action, respect for one another, and a commitment to the common good.
For me, the lesson is clear. Progress is neither automatic nor permanent. It requires courage, engagement, and leadership. It requires people who are willing to build bridges rather than deepen divisions, and who believe that our common humanity matters more than our differences.
Whether we are advancing democracy, tackling climate change, strengthening health care, or building more equitable societies, the path forward depends on our willingness to lead with inclusion, compassion, and hope.
Today, I am choosing hope. And I am inspired by a new generation of leaders, and by millions of people working alongside them, who are helping build a more equitable, peaceful, and sustainable future for all.
