Enabling AI inferencing on VMs and containers. microVMs are kind of my thing (qemu-microvm, libkrun, krunkit and muvm). Opinions my own.

AI people are so funny. The industry has known about covert channels for DECADES. They do not matter for 99.9% of use cases. They matter for AI agent evaluations in a sandbox with code execution. That is the 0.1%. Sooo... OpenAI security people just failed at their jobs. Again.
‘In one experiment, we asked agents in separate VMs, created and managed by OpenAI’s sandboxing software on shared host machines, to exchange synthetic secrets without the use of network connections or shared writable files—something that our systems are meant to prevent. The agents found a way to communicate using the processor’s cache’

btw this is all well-known in the industry
I built 𝚌𝚙𝚞-𝚌𝚑𝚊𝚝, a reproduction of @openai's findings of covert communication using the CPU. It runs on a generic host with 2+ Firecracker microVMs with no internet access. Works on x86 and even my M5 chip. I was able to chat via 3 separate mechanisms: ① CPU contention ② Cache eviction timing ③ DRAM bandwidth contention … across multiple CPUs, defeating all Firecracker's production recommendations (no SMT, no KSM, tenants pinned to different cores.) Essentially, if shared hardware is involved, there's a good chance your agents can communicate covertly. And with really decent latency. The good news: this is decidedly different from a *side-channel attack* where the agents could steal information (Meltdown/Spectre), a category of attack that providers like Vercel Sandbox mitigate. Further, in our real-world environment, these 'whispering' techniques are much harder to pull off and easier for us to monitor and detect (sampling hardware counters + lots of at-scale statistical data.) Noteworthy: ironically, OpenAI and Anthropic's models refused to do this work. Open weight models got the job done. I'm worried the labs' stance might backfire and get in the way of helping developers build correct and secure systems. e.g: building a secure sandbox requires having this kind of analysis, and without it, we'll have a less secure world.

No, that's completely incorrect. Pixels store a fuzzy hash model in encrypted storage only accessible to the Trusted Execution Environment. Scans of the fingerprints aren't stored anywhere. The scans and fuzzy hash models aren't sent anywhere. Even the OS can't access either.

Exactly! You're no longer laying the bricks one by one, but you're still in charge of directing the work to ensure the house can withstand the test of time and it's actually a good place to live.
models do not produce simplicity. they hedge, for completeness. that's your value. the lack of this skill is called AI slop.

I wrote about how iPhone face tracking is just good software and the Face ID camera thing is a myth on Reddit again. This time I went into the history of the tech though, which you might find interesting! reddit.com/r/vtubertech/comm…

I'm sooo happy to see John's response here, because this was driving me crazy too. How can someone be measuring their app's behavior IN SECONDS??? It's 2026 folks. User initiated interactions can't take more than 250ms.
I had a similar reaction. Everyone should applaud performance improvements, but gauge against the “speed of light”, not just a sloppy competitor. If you are measuring in seconds, you may have already anchored yourself incorrectly. Structure the UI so you can put locally cached media up just a few vblanks after the process launches. Structure the server so it can return everything necessary for the dynamic UI in one single query that was kicked off in parallel with the Gfx API initialization, branching to a modern transport protocol for large media files. You should be able to double click on the launcher and have it responsive before your muscle memory can slam the pointer to a location to click on.

I mean, we can literally start a VM all the way from the hypervisor to the kernel to userspace in 100ms, but need 50x more to show a freaking menu?
